Morning Brew – Monday, April 9: Bonnie Raitt features lesbian couple in video, Rosie gets a new gig

Good morning!

Last Friday kicked off our revival of Best Lesbian Week Ever for The Huffington Post Gay Voices. Every Friday you can read a list of the top lesbian news, in case you don’t get enough of it right here. And if you STILL can’t get enough, see what’s happening over at our Tumblr.

Rosie O’Donnell will guest star on Happily Divorced as “Katie O’Grady, a high school friend of Fran (Fran Drescher) and Judi (Tichina Arnold) who helps Fran learn a lesson about her relationship with her overbearing mother Dori (Rita Moreno).” The TVLand series follows Fran and her gay ex-husband as they maintain their friendship.

If you want to know where Ellen gets her hair done, it’s at Hermes salon in Beverly Hills. Gotta keep that blonde bright!

Not long ago I told you that MC Lyte wasn’t super happy about Tyler the Creator calling her a dyke in an Odd Future song. After she spoke out, Tyler responded, saying:

I don’t know if she’s gay or not. It was a joke. But if she took offense, so be it — I’m not gonna apologize, but I didn’t mean for her feelings to get hurt. Usually people in that position, you’d think they would laugh it off and go on with their day. But I guess she caught feelings. I didn’t mean to do that, but whatever.

Well that’s a little nicer than how he treated Tegan and Sara, but he’s certainly not gaining any friends when he uses homophobic lyrics.

Here’s a clip from the upcoming season of True Blood with Sookie and Alcide. (I kind of ship them.)

Flavorwire has a great list of 10 Great Female-Fronted Punk Bands You Should Know, included queer-fronted Screaming Females and Tacocat.

Out classical guitarist Sharon Isbin was on A Prairie Home Companion over the weekend. She also announced she will be the subject of a documentary about her life over four years. Susan Dangel followed Sharon “from concert stages, to the GRAMMY’s and the White House” and some celebrities who appear include Joan Baez, Nancy Wilson and Martina Navratilova. The documentary will be finished sometime this year.

UK actress Alison Steadman told The Independent she had the first ever lesbian kiss on TV, but doesn’t get credit for it.

I was proud to be involved in the first lesbian kiss on TV It was in 1974 in a BBC play called Girl, with Myra Frances, and it got a lot of reaction at the time. Then, when Brookside came on years later, people said “Ooh, Anna Friel did this kiss with another woman, and it was the first time on TV.” And I’m like, no, actually it was me!

We all stand corrected!

Bonnie Raitt’s new video for “Right Down the Line” celebrates love of all kinds, including a gay couple and a lesbian pairing.
