Morning Brew – Mon. May 6: Tara and Pam are back on “True Blood,” a lesbian fan inspires punk band Rise Against

Good morning!

Musician Josh Ritter said he didn’t realize he was playing a pretty homophobic school when he said he’d perform a show at Messiah College which “requires all students to sign a ‘Community Covenant’ promising to, among other things, ‘avoid such sinful practices as…homosexual behavior….'” He wrote about this on his Facebook page, saying he took the opportunity to tell them he didn’t agree, and that he’ll be donating the money he received to the Trevor Project:

I spoke honestly about my personal views — that we should all have the right to love — and to marry freely, no matter what our sexual orientation. Everyone was respectful and kind, and it is my hope that they’ll continue to demand a change to the Community Covenant.

Thank you, Josh! You’re definitely a lesbro.

Speaking of lesbros, Tim McIlrath of the punk band Rise Against said he received a letter from a lesbian fan, and it inspired the song “Make it Stop.” He spoke about how he doesn’t want homophobic fans and wants gay and lesbian fans to feel more than welcome at their shows.

That is some serious punk spirit, Mr. McIlrath. You’re doing it right!

While we’re talking about allies, Sara Bareilles said her new song “Brave” was inspired by a gay friend who was going through the coming out process. The lyric video for the song was directed by Lindsey Byrnes and is adorable.

Finland’s Krista Siegfrids kissed a female back-up dancer during a recent performance of her song “Marry Me” that she plans on reprising during a live television performance May 18. She told The Independent:

Homophobic people are angry with me for doing this. But I’m planning a surprise at the end of my performance. It’s live on TV, so nobody can stop me. I don’t think “Marry Me” is political. It’s about love and tolerance. But gay marriage is not allowed in Finland and that’s wrong. I wanted to make a statement about that.
