Morning Brew: Friday, May 7

Morning!

Who knew that the American adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo would turn into such a big media blitz? It’s been reported that now Anne Hathaway, Scarlett Johansson, Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Ellen Page and Mia Wasikowska all are vying for the role of the bisexual hacker, Lisbeth Salander. This is like a dream and I wish we’d be able to vote for our pick. It’s not just these women, either — if you recall, Kristen Stewart and Carey Mulligan are also allegedly pining to play Lisbeth.

Here’s my idea: Take out the actresses who have already played somewhat bi or lesbianish on screen — Natalie (Black Swan), Keira (Edge of Love), Scarlett (Vicky Cristina Barcelona), Kristen (The Runaways), Anne (Havoc — and that leaves the newcomers Carey and Mia, who both look great with short haircuts, and Ellen Page. I know who I think would be the most, uh, convincing.

Listen, I know some of you are probably going to hate me so please scroll down if you do NOT want to read a Grey’s Anatomy spoiler.

On last night’s episode, Callie and Arizona broke up. I know, I know — what the hell, right? I won’t give you any more details, as Dara will do a wonderful job with the recap, I’m sure. Instead, I’ll give you some peace of mind from Shonda Rhimes herself.

Feel better? I trust her.

Another spoiler warning: Fans of Coronation Street, scroll past if you don’t want to know what will happen with Sophie and Sian!

In true soap opera fashion, one of the girls is going to be in the hospital fighting for her life, while the other declares her true feelings. This won’t happen until July, but you know Corrie likes to tease us months in advance with what’s going to happen with lesbians on their show.

What is the fascination with lesbian school teachers lately? From Jane Lynch‘s telling of her affair with a prof to the Waterloo Road storyline, this is becoming the new “pregnant lesbian” cliche. And now, even dudes are picking up on it. Singer/songwriter Dave Bindini told The Telegraph his new album will feature songs about “dead hockey players, cannibalism and lesbian school teachers.” Yeah, we’re not really in good company there. Hope he’s kidding.

Sia never fails to give a great soundbite. She’s Cherrie magazine’s June cover girl, and in her interview she told them about her partner JD Samson:

JD is my ‘Junicorn’. She’s sort of both male and female, she doesn’t know what she is, and we don’t care. The fact is if she’s male, I’m straight and if she’s female, I’m gay, and I don’t care either way … when JD and I have our baby, when it turns four, we’ll probably move back to Adelaide.

BTW if you haven’t heard the Diplo remix of her song “Clap Your Hands,” get thee to her MySpace page now.

Have an awesome weekend.
