Morning Brew – Friday, June 1: Brandi Carlile on “All Things Considered,” Rihanna still wants Cheryl Cole

Can you believe it’s June already? I’d like to wish miss Brandi Carlile a happy 31st birthday today.

If you’re a fan of Brandi’s (as you should be), she’s asking that you donate $31 to creating freshwater projects in developing nations. Her Looking Out Foundation will match the total at the end.

Brandi was on All Things Considered yesterday, where she was asked how much her sexuality plays into her songwriting. Here’s her answer:

I don’t consider myself a very androgynous person, but I think [people] can sense a certain dissent or a difference in gender roles,” Carlile says. “They can sense that I’m not singing or talking about things in a traditional way. As a songwriter, it’s really important that that become a place for expression, because of what other songwriters did for me as a young gay teenager. Having those gender pronouns used in an ambiguous way made me feel like I could relate to songs that were sung by women or men. Those kinds of things being addressed creatively and politically made me feel like I could be successful and proud.

Brandi’s album, Bear Creek, comes out on Tuesday and we’ll have an interview with her that day, too. June 5 could be your best day ever!

Also on All Things Considered this week was Chely Wright. They asked her about the success of “Single White Female,” a song about finding the right man, and knowing she was gay:

From the outside looking in, I was celebrating successes that people dream of, and I would have a moment of jubilation. And then that dark cloud would come over me, and I would realize that I was being suffocated by my lie. And, you know, I think it’s really a human experience to have happiness and joy, but then to be troubled by something, to have something looming over you … and that was my black cloud. That was my looming bad news, and there wasn’t an hour in a day that went by for all of those years that it didn’t kind of squeeze me.

Shay Mitchell is looking stunning in Complex magazine this month. She’s showing off her swimming moves, per usual.

Rihanna’s sexy poses in Esquire UK have hit the net, but apparently she also told the mag that her girl crush is (still) Cheryl Cole.

In case you still haven’t gotten into Batwoman, here are 10 reasons you should love her.I like number 2: “She’s an out and proud lesbian, but not a predictable one.” Good, I hate when people know everything I’m going to do. Guess that just comes along with the gayness!

The Rumpus has a fantastic conversation between bisexual artist MariNaomi and Alison Bechdel. Half of it as drawn as a comic, which is perfect for the two women. Alison discloses how she feels about Dykes to Watch Out For and if she misses it:

Honestly, I don’t. I feel like I’m really proud of it, I loved doing it, I had a great passion for it for many years but I just lost the impulse I had to do it. I feel like there was not the same need for it that there had been originally. I feel much more passionate now about memoir; I feel like I need to pay attention to that, do what I feel like doing.
