Morning Brew: Friday, Jan. 8

TGIF!

Despite receiving quite a spanking from the queer community over her single “I Kissed a Girl,” Katy Perry recently said she could go gay if men let her down. “I have a soft spot for women,” she said. “If any of my boyfriends ever fail me, I’ll turn to them! Some women walk into the room, and they’re so beautiful and you’re like: ‘I wanna smell you,’ you know? I have certain girlfriends who I just think are the most angelic, beautiful creatures.” Lesbians: The last resort for straight women done wrong.

Kathy Griffin was in New York to film her episode for Law & Order: SVU this week and a few pictures have been released. There are none of the Mariska-Kathy liplock yet, but I’m pretty into the one where she’s resisting arrest while wearing the fist pumping T-shirt.

The city of Glasgow is excited about their new lesbian TV series Lip Service because it’s going to make the city look “amazing” and “as cool as New York.” Filming is underway and an insider told The Daily Record, “It’s not going to show lesbians in a bad light. It’s not all about bed-hopping sex antics. It’s far more like This Life in that it’s five friends and how they help each other through various emotional dilemmas caused by relationships. You’ll want to be part of this gang. They are good people to be around.” Fingers crossed!

NewNowNext.com has RuPaul’s Top 5 Drag Moments in Film, including Rocky Horror Picture Show and anything starring Divine. Noticeably absent: Victor Victoria and Orlando — or women in drag in general.

Bitch Slap is out today on VOD and in select theaters. Dread Central has a great interview with the filmmakers and stars, where they answer how they were able to have such authentic lesbian scenes. “One of our camera operators on-set was bi-sexual,” Erin Cummings says, “and here’s the thing: we all felt that if you are going to do a fight scene or a love scene or whatever you are going to do, you want to make it something that’s real, and to be quite honest, I want lesbians to watch this movie and go, ‘Yeah, that’s pretty hot. I want to be in the middle of that,’ and I want guys to watch this movie and say, ‘Yeah, that’s pretty hot. I want to be in the middle of that.’ So otherwise, what’s the point?” Erin Cummings for president!

Roma Maffia told CNN that her character Liz Cruz on Nip/Tuck is not exactly thinking about dating right now. For those who don’t watch the show, Liz used to be a lesbian but then dated a dude doctor who left her for a porn star. “We have to leave that open,” Roma said of her character’s sexuality. “It’s one or the other. She’s not going into animals.” Well that answers my next question.

For the first time ever, you can own The Well of Loneliness on audiobook, as read by actress Cecilia Fage. Perhaps the book will be a little less depressing read aloud with a British accent.

Ellen‘s press tour with the American Idol judges continues to unfold with a new interview in Rolling Stone this week. Ellen confronted the criticism that the show has been homophobic in the past by saying she is “very sensitive” to homophobia and that she has never been offended by anything Simon or Ryan have done or said. I have a feeling they might be a little more sensitive to it themselves, now. Let’s hope.

In an interview with The Daily Intel, Suze Orman answers some fun questions, like the last time she drove a car: “K.T. normally drives, and we wanted to stop and pick up some food at this Chinese restaurant that we liked. So we stopped, and K.T. went in to get it, and this policeman came over and said we had to move, so I had to get into the driver’s seat and drive around the block a few times until she came out.” Also, she thinks spending “anything above $200” on a haircut “is nuts,” so don’t pay a penny more to recreate her ‘do.

Have you ever wondered what Wendy and Lisa listen to? I mean, besides Prince? Here’s a fun video of them shopping at L.A.’s Amoeba Records. They are real into soul and disco, and the only lesbianish thing about their purchases is Grace Jones. They probably already own Sainthood anyway.

Have a great weekend.
