Morning Brew – Friday, April 8: Anne Ramsay plays gay on “Secret Life of American Teenager,” sneak peek of tonight’s “Degrassi”

Happy Friday!

While at SXSW last month, Uh Huh Her sat down with Spinner to talk about the new record, being music fans and how they came to write a song for The Kids Are All Right.

Does anyone else feel like this guy doesn’t really know who the hell he’s talking to?

OMG guys — Robin is a lesbian again. Anne Ramsay, who romanced Jenny on The L Word until she was trying to U-Haul her, is playing gay on Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Her character, Nora, is the mom of Ricky, a teen baby daddy. Nora apparently goes to prison and comes back with a new girlfriend. Ricky won’t let his mom stay with him, and he is definitely not letting her lover stay. AKA Ricky is no fun.

Outsports.com has a great profile of Mari Burningham, the out lesbian volleyball coach at University of Redlands in Southern California. She’s a Mormon and has been married to a guy, despite knowing she was gay most of her life. But once he wanted to start a family, she began to break down. Here’s what she writes of the beginning of her happiness, post-divorce:

In December 2003 my life changed — she walked in the room and it was love at first sight. I was speechless and smitten before I even knew her name. Tasha and I became friends and again I had that old familiar feeling like I had experienced with my girlfriend in high school. It was like my world was on fire, colors were brighter, foods tasted better. I had more energy and I felt like I floated when I walked. I longed to see her at club practices and tournaments and I found reasons to talk to her and be near her. Suddenly I was alive again and I knew that for the past five years I had been numb and a shell of a person. Tasha was an openly gay coach for a local club team and so rumors once again started to fly concerning my sexual orientation. Though I wasn’t acting on my feelings for her I was called into the athletic director’s office at BYU and was told that I was guilty by association and that I wasn’t to have anything to do with her or anyone else gay anymore.

Read the rest of the piece to find out what happened, but rest assured she’s been successful in her position at Redwoods for seven years now — as an out lesbian.

Anyone But Me executive producer Susan Miller has another web series called Bestsellers, which has a lesbian character, too! She was on ABC’s @ Work the other day to talk about the series.

Jasika Nicole joined her castmates in a SpoilerTV video for “Fans Ask Fringe.” She is wearing a pretty fierce fedora and says that her character, Astrid, would be something like a tattoo artist in her alternate universe life.

A band called Girls in Trouble has a new album out called Half You Half Me which has a little bit of a lesbian vibe to its cover. The first track is called “We are Androgynous.” It’s really speaking to my sensibilities.

Nicki Minaj gave a female fan a lap dance on stage the other night. In the video, she says girls are more fun because “they are always way more excited.”

One of my new fave queer bands is Hunx & His Punx, which features three out women — one of them being Shannon Shaw, of Bay Area punk band Shannon & The Clams. The resident male of the band, Hunx (naturally), told The L.A. Times:

She has one of my favorite voices. It’s kind of hard playing up against her because she’s so powerful. In the past, I tried to be super girly, but now I can be deeper and the girls can go crazy.

It’s so Crybaby-esque. I love it!

Catch this sneak peak of what’s happening on Degrassi tonight between Fiona, Adam and Holly J. Threeway love triangles never end well!
