Morning Brew – Diana Nyad talks to Ellen

Good morning!

If you’re in NYC today, make sure to vote. If you need help deciding between two gay friendly candidates, check out our post about Christine Quinn and Bill de Blasio.

Seeing this Backstrom sizzle reel only makes me sadder the show was not picked up by CBS. Mamie Gumner played a lesbian cop alongside star Rainn Wilson in the pilot. The best line: “Why do queers make everything so gay?” Thanks to Rainn for posting so we can see what we’re missing.

In much better news, the French lesbianish show The Returned is coming to the Sundance Channel for Halloween. AND Music Box Films will be putting it on VOD/DVD.

Tonight on PBS, Billie Jean King gets a whole documentary dedicated to her awesome. (Look for a review later today.) Last night she went on The Colbert Report to talk about her legendary battle against Bobby Riggs.

Amber Heard is at work on her next film, London Fields. Deadline describes her role as:

…the ultimate eternal sexual femme fatale, possessed of unusual beauty and hypnotic magnetism. Mysterious and clairvoyant, she sets a plan in motion to fulfill the prophecy of her own murder.

Michael Jordan‘s daughter Jasmine has officially come out on her Instagram. She’s so cute with her girlfriend, who of course is a ball player.

IndieWire has a great feature on out director Sarah Spillane. She shares her favorite movies:

That’s a tough one between Kimberly Peirce’s Boys Don’t Cry, Jodie Foster’s Little Man Tate, and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. Why? Because they are all bad ass films regardless of the director’s sex.

TMZ asked Jane Lynch if she still believes in gay marriage, despite being in the middle of a divorce. Any guesses what she said?

New Yorkers, out legendary author/playwright/activist Lorraine Hansberry‘s letters to lesbian magazine The Ladder will be on view at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art from November 22 until March. I hope I can make it to Brooklyn before it leaves!

Diana Nyad is on The Ellen Show today. Here’s a little snippet of their interview.

I love how she says she wants to be a “bold person, a fierce person.” What an inspiration.
