Morning Brew – Annaleigh Ashford is bringing Betty de Milo back to “Masters of Sex”

Good morning! I went and saw Holly Miranda play at the Ace Hotel in Portland yesterday and she did a bomb cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Lover You Should Have Come Over.”

Some lesbians are having a really hard time with The L Word not being on air. They want Netflix to bring it back.

Former Fox News talking head Sally Kohn got her own day in her hometown of Allentown, PA. Nice! If you love reading, this is the list for you: The Best LGBT Books of 2013: 92 Writers Name Their Favorites. So many books going on my Christmas list. Nicola Griffith recommends a not so queer book over at NPR: Master and Commander. Congrats to Lydia Lavelle, the new first-ever out lesbian mayor of Carrboro, North Carolina. Now for her first item: Castrating all the men in town. Kim Ann Foxman says she’s slowly but surely working on a new album in between all her international DJ gigs. Yay! Chicago-based group The Locals has a really fun punk rock cover of “The Heat Miser Song” from The Year Without Santa Claus. The Directors Guild of America is set to honor Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers with its 2014 Diversity Award in January. Says DGA President (and out director) Paris Barclay:

“The DGA Diversity Award is an exceedingly rare honor, given only when we feel strongly that someone is making a real difference in the hiring of women and minorities. In the decade that Shonda and Betsy have been creating and producing buzzworthy television, their record of diverse hiring has been consistently outstanding at a time when very few television series meet that standard. As a result, they have impacted the careers of dozens of women and minorities — they’ve made stars not only in front of, but behind the camera as well.”
Hell yeah! Congrats to Shonda and Betsy! ELLE interviewed Jenna Lyons’ assistant and it turns out she likes to take meets at the Waverly Inn. Fun fact: Ashley Merriman is the chef at the Waverly. You might remember her from Top Chef. I never get sick of seeing Joan Jett sing “Cherry Bomb.”

Annaleigh Ashford is coming back for the second season of Masters of Sex, which means we’ll get more of the lesbian prostitute Betty de Milo! Sadly, this does mean she has to leave her gig on Broadway where she stars in Kinky Boots. The Fosters has a new promo!

Post by The Fosters.

Also, congrats to Sherri Saum, who announced she is pregnant with twins! Janis Ian won a Grammy for narrating her own audiobook last year, and now she’s recording another. This time she’s reading (and singing!) a new version of theologian Miriam Therese Winter’s autobiography, The Singer and the Song. Mr. Media did a video interview with Reaching for the Moon star Miranda Otto. Can there be spoilers if a movie is about a famous person’s life? Isn’t it a little like saying the Titanic sinks at the end?
