Morning Brew – Alison Bechdel and Mary L. Bonauto win MacArthur Genius Grants

Good morning!

A huge congratulations to Alison Bechdel and Mary L. Bonauto for their MacArthur Genius Grants. Two out women who will surely use the money and their powers for good, as Mary is the Civil Rights Project Director at Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders and was a driving force behind marriage equality and repealing DOMA Alison is, of course, the woman behind The Bechdel Test we use to decipher feminist-friendly movies from those all about dudes, as well as Dykes to Watch Out For, Fun Home and Are You My Mother? Well deserved!

Rosie’s return to The View gave the show its best ratings in years.

Bisexual writer Daisy Hernández talked with the Huffington Post about her new memoir, A Cup of Water Under My Bed. A quote:
My story also gets complicated because I’m bisexual, and my family gets really hopeful at one point when I date a cis man, and then gets really sad again when I date a woman. I haven’t even talked to them about dating trans people. I was like, you know what, I can honor the “don’t ask, don’t tell policy” here (laughs). It’s not even so much my family, but my own exhaustion of going through this process with a relationship that’s still in its infancy. So I think, you know what, I don’t need to talk about my romantic life until things get really serious.

Mary Lambert talked with Out about her childhood and ever-changing faith.

Also in Out, Jill Soloway on creating Transparent. Here she is on her sister, Faith Soloway, who also writes for the show.

Well, my sister came out when she was 25, and there was definitely that feeling of, Oh yeah. I’ve kind of always known my sister is gay, but I haven’t known it. So definitely, that helped resonate and I have so many friends who are queer and so many friends who are trans that it just always seemed obvious to me how what a great metaphor being trans is. Being trans is kind of having its moment [in popular culture]; it’s been rising and rising and to me it just feels like an incredible metaphor for all kinds of transformation, all kinds of transcendence, all kinds of change.
Cherry Jones is in a new film called Days and Nights, opening September 26.

Vice remembers the music and style of Chasing Amy.

It seems Love & Hip-Hop: New York star Erica Mena may have split from her girlfriend, Cyn.

Out actress Geri Jewell attended The Facts of Life reunion at The Paley Center on Monday night. From what I can tell, no one talked about Jo being a lesbian, which is a missed opportunity.

Cara Delevingne will star in Paper Towns, based on the book from John Green. From Variety:

The story follows young neighbors who share the jarring experience of finding the body of a man who committed suicide. The two leads grow apart – until the night he finds her at his bedroom window, dressed like a ninja. She enlists him in a campaign to get revenge on the people who’ve hurt her. The next day, she vanishes and he is left to ponder the ramifications of the evening. Then he begins getting clues and follows them in an attempt to find her.
