Morning Brew – Laurie Metcalf has kissed women before, will do it again on “Getting On”

Good morning! Happy Spirit Day! Today’s #TBT is Martina Navratilova, wearing purple in 1975.

Out musician Brandy Clark has written a new song for Toby Keith called “Drunk Americans.” Despite the name, the song is actually about accepting all kinds of people. Lyrics include “”We ain’t black, we ain’t white, we ain’t left, we ain’t right, we just came here to drink/We just raise up our glass, we don’t give a rat’s ass if you’re a Democrat or a Republican.” Brandy is secretly changing country music and I love it.

As a huge Roseanne fan, I love this interview with Laurie Metcalf (aka Jackie!) Now starring as the mom of a gay adult son in a new show called The McCarthys as well as HBO’s hilarious Getting On, Laurie spoke with PrideSource about her impact on LGBT culture. She also was asked about her upcoming kiss with Betty Buckley on Getting On, as Betty told the same reporter it was her first girl kiss. He then asked if it was Laurie’s first as well.

I think so, yeah. I mean, I may have done it in a play or something. I don’t know. I can’t remember. But no, I think so. I don’t mean to build it up or something, but the kiss is a metaphor for that show. It’s not a big deal on the show; it’s just something that happens very spontaneously, and then it’s over and you’re like, “What was that?” But it’s odd, and yet it’s kind of funny because you don’t expect it, and it’s kind of weirdly heartbreaking because Betty’s character needs to connect to somebody and it just comes out of her. So, it just runs this gamut of emotions, but then it’s over in two seconds and you think, “Wow, I don’t know how to feel about that.”
