Fiona Apple to unleash new album in spring 2011

I was staring at the blogs, just looking for some news about Fiona Apple, her whereabouts, or something like that. I was having a sweet fix of a daydream of a time when the songstress would reemerge, but knew this reality was just hopeless.

That was until a dove of hope arrived on the blogosphere. I thought it was a rumor but it was actually the truth – Fiona Apple is set to release a new album next spring!

It’s been five years since Grammy-nominated Extraordinary Machine, and 11 years since When the Pawn… (if you can say the full title in one breath, you win a prize). And that album came a long three years after her smash debut Tidal. Since each musical masterpiece was worth the wait, I will gladly – albeit impatiently – twiddle my thumbs with bated breath until next spring.

The great news comes from the Grammy winner’s drummer and co-producer Charley Drayton, who spilled the beans about the ballpark release date in a recent profile with Modern Drummer. Word has gotten around to the likes of singer-songwriter Michelle Branch, who boasted via Twitter, “Hate to brag but I heard a couple new Fiona Apple tracks today. Amazing.” Holy paper bags, that’s so unfair! I doubt she’s ever driven 10 hours to see Fiona Apple on tour – twice – or has somehow incorporated her music into every facet of her life, but whatever. I’m not bitter.

Apple made her indelible mark in the 1990s music scene as the off-the-beat, tortured artist with lead tracks “Shadowboxer,” “Sleep to Dream,” and the Grammy-winning “Criminal,” which showcased the then 19-year-old’s mature lyricism, complex musicality, and serious pipes. She solidified her cult following with her 1997 MTV VMA acceptance speech for Best New Artist, in which she preached, “Go with yourself!” and bemoaned the shallow nature of pop culture. Appleheads rejoiced and continue to shout that very phrase on street corners, the subway, and at football games. Oh wait, is that just me? Awkward.

I’ve already started a countdown until spring 2011 to prepare myself for her next angsty, bluesy, I-hate-you-all record. Until then, I won’t be able to go to sleep to dream, so I’ll just shadowbox across the universe to pass the time, hoping please, please, please, that Ms. Apple tries as fast as she can – not slow like honey – to finish her album. Otherwise, I’ll be a very sullen girl.
