A list even Judy Gold’s mother would approve

In honor of Chanukka, I present to you eight queer/Jewish books with fabulous titles. Caveat: I haven’t actually read any of these, so this is all about the words on the covers.

1. Yentl’s Revenge: The New Wave of Jewish Feminism, by Dana Ruttenberg Technically not a lesbian book, but it’s a feminist anthology, which means there’s got to be at least one reference to something Sapphic. More important, it brings to mind Barbra Streisand in boy drag ready to mess you up.

2. In Every Laugh a Tear: A Novel, by Leslea Newman Because one thing lesbians and Jews know is how to hamper a perfectly joyful moment by getting all serious.

3. The Limits of Pleasure, by Daniel M. Jaffe Again, why can’t we just be happy? Come on, people, would it kill us?

4. Running Fiercely Toward a High Thin Sound: A Novel, by Judith Katz We’re not just killjoys; we’re masochists too. But also fierce runners with highly attuned ears. Kind of like whippets, as I’m always saying.

5. Like Bread on the Seder Plate: Jewish Lesbians and the Transformation of Tradition, by Rebecca Alpert Gotta love an inside joke. For those not in the know, it’s like another Betty cameo on The L Word; it just has no business being there.

6. Friday the Rabbi Wore Lace, by Karen X. Tulchinsky Simple reason: nekkid Jewesses getting it on (this one’s erotica). Although, the cover image kind of wrecks the fantasy.

7. Nice Jewish Girls: A Lesbian Anthology, by Evelyn Torton Beck Because as even that anti-gay, right-wing CEO-led chain store knows everyone loves a nice Jewish girl. Oh, and apparently everyone loves a lesbian too.

8. In Jewish Texas: A Family Memoir, by Stanley E. Ely Texas? Who knew? Jews and queers I suppose we really are everywhere.
