On a music-related note (pun intended), Patti Smith’s documentary DVD, Dream of Life is out today. Directed by Steven Sebring, the film follows Smith on stage and off over several years, highlighting her experience in music, art, writing and all other facets of her life. It’s a must for any music fan who appreciates the history of pioneering women in rock.

What else is new at the record stores this week:

Syleena JohnsonChapter Four: Labor Pains (Aneelys)

The R&B chanteuse’s fourth album continues in her tradition of recording different parts of her life. This time, the music focuses on her love for her son and family.

Laura BarrettEarth Sciences (Paper Bag)

Barrett refers to her music as “sci-fi folk” and that is a right on description. Fans of Mirah and other eccentric female musicians with pleasantly clear and light vocals will like Earth Sciences.

Heather HeadleyAudience of One (EMI Gospel)

An accomplished vocalist who first made a name for herself on Broadway, Headley has been able to smoothly transition into contemporary soul-pop. Now she’s trying her hand at gospel which unsurprisingly suits her as well.

Eliane EliasBossa Nova Stories (Blue Note Records)

Jazz fans will fall for this Brazilian vocalist and composer. On this album, she takes on standard bossa nova classics like “Girl from Ipanema” and her own version of Stevie Wonder’s “Superwoman.”
