Your Weekly Women to Listen to: 2:54, Elliphant and more

Happy Wednesday! Thank you President Obama for restoring my confidence in your ability to see that gay people are simply people. We deserve the same rights to love as anyone else in this world. Now let’s do something about it!

The truth is, I don’t even believe in marriage for myself. But if my friends and loved ones – or two consenting adult strangers – want to take that step, a bunch of bigoted assholes with no stake in the matter really shouldn’t be given the authority to accept or deny that from happening. No one asked me if it was alright for Kim Kardashian to get married. Hell, no one even asked me if it was alright to continue airing reruns of her wedding on the E! network or plastering her face everywhere I look. I feel like I am being stalked by her publicist! Actually, I wonder if we can start a class action lawsuit about this. While I do some research, here are some lovely ladies to get in your ears pronto!

File Under: Dancehall, reggaetronica

From: Stockholm/sexyland

For Fans Of: Major Lazer, Santigold, test tube shots, yellow and green as accent colors, fog machines, M.I.A., long nights of drinking and sweaty dancing, Bondo Do Role, Buraka Som Sistema, simple and pretty tattoos of quotes.

Bonus: Check out this awesome video for her song “In The Jungle.” It’s basically a live-action video game.

File Under: Sensual electropop

From: Poland

For Fans Of: Kylie Minogue, Robyn, being a closet fan of boy-bands, letting other people be the center of attention, Goldfrapp, Ellie Goulding, hats, spending time alone in your room to decompress, Pinterest.

Bonus: Thank you to my main homeslice from Poland, Natalia, for another great recommendation! Iza has songs in her native tongue as well as the songs that I can understand in English. From what I can tell with my limited information, her Polish songs seem to have a different overall tone in that they are more singer-songwriter pop instead of electro.

File Under: ’60s girl-band garage rock

From: Chicago (represent ladies! and dude)

For Fans Of: Vivian Girls, Dum Dum Girls, roller derby girls, any excuse to go to the beach and/or any excuse to drink, jorts, Susan & The Surftones, wearing your hair up with a bandana, when Scooby Doo had an episode with the Harlem Globetrotters, vintage dresses with fringe, Best Coast

Bonus: I just found out the band is having a record release party next week so hopefully this means we’ll be hearing more of them. Thanks to my brother friend Jorge for turning me on to them!

File Under: Moody alt-rocking sisters with an affinity for The Melvins

From: London

For Fans Of: Morrissey, To Bring You My Love-era PJ Harvey, Great Northern, Imogen Heap, recognizing that Gavin Rossdale is pretty, Chelsea Wolfe, black clothing, post-wave, opting for a spider, snake or lizard as a pet, having an artistic hobby or profession and surprising people when your work isn’t all depressing.

Bonus: The duo is currently finishing up a North American tour with the xx but will start a new one supporting Widowspeak in June. Meanwhile, those of you in the UK should be able to hear their BBC Radio session later tonight! Plus Hannah is a gay.

That’s it for this week’s recommendations. I hope to be back next week with new ones. If not, it will be because I have a bunch of great interviews coming your way that I am busy transcribing. In fact, I’ll be interviewing Butterfly Boucher tomorrow so if you have any questions you’d like me to ask, please feel free to send them my way. Hit me up on Twitter or Facebook.
