Your Weekly Women to Listen to: Lay Low, Trixie Whitley, Emeli Sandé and more

Hello friends! It has been way too long since I’ve had time to write this column, but I’m back! Don’t worry, I won’t make you wait any longer. Let’s dig in.

File Under: Folky-blues with a hint of trip-hop

From: Iceland

For Fans of: Wye Oak, Timber Timbre, Dead Man’s Bones, cardigan sweaters and smoking jackets, Criminal Minds, Unsolved Mysteries, comfort food, dimly lit spaces, Regina Spektor, Joan As Policewoman, Martina Topley Bird.

Bonus: Lay Low is currently touring with indie darlings Of Monsters and Men, will be able to celebrate her forthcoming album being released internationally later this fall and she’s offering up a free download of one of her songs! Thanks to AfterEllen.com reader Disa for the suggestion and for also introducing me to such an interesting artist. Extra Bonus: She’s out!

File Under: Bluesy singer-songwriter with a voice that will grab your shoulders and shake you

From: New York via Belgium

For Fans of: Florence + The Machine (but much less dramatic), Joss Stone, Brandi Carlile, Taylor Dayne (I can’t quit you!), Johnny Lang, intimate gatherings vs. large parties, hanging on to cards or letters for sentimental reasons, barbecue-flavor, using a still camera over digital.

Bonus: Trixie grew up in an artistic family and learned how to play the piano and drums at a very early age. One thing that I love about her music is how beautifully imperfect it is. She lets you hear her voice crack when it’s been stretched to the emotional breaking point. You can check out the beautiful minimalist music video for “A Thousand Thieves” here and stream/download it below.

File Under: Pop R&B soul with fierce hair!

From: Scotland

For Fans of: Delilah, Beyonce, Leona Lewis, wearing heels everywhere, deep purple as an accent color, Adele, Mary J. Blige, being the center of attention, films starring Angela Bassett, shirt dresses.

Bonus: Her album Our Version of Events will be out in the U.S. this June! This isn’t a real bonus, but it gave me a chuckle. Check out this cover of her song “Heaven.”

I mean…I give the guy points for trying!

File Under: Darkish indie rock, electrorock

From: New Zealand

For Fans of: Passion Pit, Fun., road trips with friends, Grouplove, The Joy Formidable, Metric, Eurythmics, Great Northern, vegetable skewers, bonfires, Polaroids, nerd love.

Bonus: The band goes back and forth with other artists doing remixes of each other’s songs and you find them on their Soundcloud page to stream or download. Another big bonus for me is that I’m seeing them live this Sunday along with Now, Now!

File Under: Soft singer-songwriter

From: North Wales

For Fans of: Juana Molina, Vashti Bunyan, rainy days with full kettles of tea steeping, Kathryn Calder, Nick Drake, old sweaters, the smell of old books, minoring in some kind of art history or taking still life painting classes.

Bonus: Not only is Sophie a total cutie, she’s also a reader of the site! (Hi Sophie!) She’s been working on some great new tunes which you can check out on her Band Page.

That’s all for this week’s recommendations. I’m happy to be back at it again. Feel free to reach out to me via Facebook, Twitter or email if you have any comments, suggestions or just want to tell me you know what I did last summer.
