“Milk” gets nominated for eight Oscars

The Oscar nominations have finally been announced, and most of the categories hold little to no surprise. Largely, it seems as if critics appreciated films like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire, Doubt and Milk the most, as other performances in Revolutionary Road, Wendy and Lucy and Rachel Getting Married were left off the list.

The gayest movie of the year, Milk, is up for eight Oscars: Sean Penn (Best Actor in a Leading Role), Josh Brolin (Actor in a Supporting Role), costume design, directing, film editing, music score, Best Picture, Writing (Original Screenplay). There’s tough competition in each category, but the film definitely stands a chance.

Some of the other nominations include:

Actress in a Leading Role

Anne HathawayRachel Getting Married

Angelina JolieChangeling

Melissa LeoFrozen River

Meryl StreepDoubt

Kate WinsletThe Reader

Actress in a Supporting Role

Amy AdamsDoubt

Penélope CruzVicky Cristina Barcelona

Viola DavisDoubt

Taraji P. HensonThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button

Marisa TomeiThe Wrestler

Some women I thought I might see recognized were left off the list, including Sally Hawkins (who won the Golden Globe for her performance in Happy-Go-Lucky), Michelle Williams (Wendy and Lucy) and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire).

It is worth noting that M.I.A. is up for Best Original Song for the track “O…Saya” from Slumdog Millionaire that she co-wrote with composer A.R. Rahman. Her competition is Peter Gabriel‘s “Down to Earth” from Wall-E and “Jai Ho,” another song from Slumdog.

What do you think of the nominations? Are there any surprises or glaring omissions?
