Maggie Q takes on “La Femme Nikita”

Long before Sydney Bristow graduated from high school, the USA network aired La Femme Nikita, a series featuring a kick-ass woman that could make you forget all about Syd’s tight leather outfits.

Peta Wilson was one of the hottest heroines to ever grace the small screen. And La Femme Nikita featured one of the steamiest girl/girl kisses on television between the star and Gina Torres.

I was delighted to learn that The WB site has all five seasons of the show — and that it is every bit as sexy as I remembered.

When I heard the rumor that The CW planned a remake of La Femme Nikita, I was not so delighted. I mean, if the original show is well done and still available for viewing, why remake it? Questions like that keep entertainment bloggers up at night.

But this week I learned something about the remake that makes me willing to at least give the new version a chance. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the show is less remake than update. The CW pilot has a new Nikita being trained to replace the original, who has “gone rogue.” (Perhaps she is the new governor of Alaska?)

Best of all, new Nikita will be played by Mission Impossible 3‘s impossibly gorgeous Maggie Q.

The casting breaks type for the character of Nikita, who has been Caucasian in prior incarnations of Nikita, including Anne Parillaud’s turn in the original French film and Bridget Fonda’s starring role in the American film adaptation, Point of No Return.

Creator Craig Silverstein said he wanted to break the stereotype, so he rewrote the lead as “beautiful and exotic.” The irony, of course, is that “exotic” is precisely the stereotypical description of Asian women. Nevertheless, THR reports, Maggie Q’s casting in Nikita marks “the highest profile series role for an Asian actress on a broadcast drama series and the highest profile CW minority casting in the network’s four-year history.”

Cool. And hot.

Personally, I think Maggie Q being cast as Nikita is destiny. From Peta to PETA, as it were.

You’re welcome.

Have you seen any of the versions of La Femme Nikita? Will Maggie Q make a good Nikita?
