Mae Whitman plays an ex-girlfriend to a flower girl

Dealing with exes is just something that comes along with dating. Depending on where you live and how serious your relationships were, it can be totally cool to see your ex out, or completely disastrous. Seeing your girlfriend’s ex out, though, can be worse.

In the Bryan Lee O’Malley comic book series Scott Pilgrim, the protagonist (Scott, of course) must battle his crush, Ramona’s, seven “evil exes” in order to date her. Ramona has been busy — her exes include a pro skater turned movie star, a pair of twins and her college roommate, Roxy Richter — the only girl among them.

The film version, starring Michael Cera as Scott, is in the works, and Mae Whitman has been cast as Roxy, the lesbian roommate/artist who apparently is a “half-ninja.” You might recall seeing her alongside Cera before on Arrested Development when she played his girlfriend, Bland Ann.

Filming is set to begin in March, under the working title Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. It also stars Allison Pill, Brie Larson and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona, the serial dater.

So far, Cera’s career has depended on him getting the girl, so I’m inclined to think he’ll be able to beat out Roxy and the other six suitors for a date with his flower delivery girl. Predictability aside, I’ll probably see it, just because I’m interested in seeing Whitman do some half-ninjaing (whatever that may be).
