“Lost Girl” announces upcoming Season 5 will be its last

Oh no, Bo! So it ain’t so. Lost Girl star Anna Silk and Showcase announced today that show’s upcoming fifth season will be its last. The series, which debuted in Canada in 2010 and picked up by Syfy the following year, has built a loyal LGBT following over the years and the news will no doubt be met with shock and sadness by its legions of fans.

Silk revealed in the video that the show’s final season will be supersized from 13 episodes to 16. The season will also be split into two parts, with the first eight episodes premiering at 9 p.m. Sunday Dec. 7 on Showcase.

In the press release announcing the news, Shaw Media senior vice president Barbara Williams praised the show’s producers and cast as well as “the most devoted and passionate fan base in Canadian television.” She called the series “landmark” and said the Shaw Media, which owns Showcase, was proud to have the series on the network.

Silk, who AfterEllen interviewed last month and never dropped any hints about the show’s finale, thanked fans in the video for the “gift” of playing Bo.

“It’s been an absolute honour playing Bo, and I’m looking forward to seeing where her personal journey leads her this season,” Silk said in the press release.

Shaw Media said the final season will deal with Bo’s journey to “hell and back to try to save the people she loves.” Yes, that means you, Kenzi.

As television’s first and only bisexual succubus, Bo has blazed a trail as one of the very few lesbian or bisexual female characters on TV with an entire series built around her as lead. The show’s message about choosing the life you want to live and her central love story with human Dr. Lauren Lewis has connected deeply with lesbian and bisexual female fans, and lots of straight fans, making it a fandom powerhouse.

Its presence on TV will be sorely missed after this final season. But I, for one, am very thankful it will get to go out on its own terms in one big and sure-to-be glorious goodbye. Thoughts on the unexpected news? Oh, who am I kidding, group hug, fandom. Group hug.
