“Lip Service” is Britain’s answer to “The L Word”

You know what’s better than talking, laughing, loving, breathing, fighting f–king, crying and drinking? Talking, laughing, loving, breathing, fighting f–king, crying and drinking — with a Scottish accent. That’s why I trust that BBC3′s newly announced lesbian dramedy, Lip Service, will be far superior to The L Word.

Lip Service is a six-part “sexy, funny and irreverent” series about the lives of young lesbians living in Glasgow.

Series creator and writer Harriet Braun (Mistresses, Hotel Babylon) thinks it’s going to be better than The L Word too. She told The Guardian: “I loved The L Word but it’s high time we saw some contemporary British lesbians, with all the bad weather, trips to the pub and repressed emotions that go with that. It will be as funny as it is pathos-filled, because in my experience that’s how life is.”

I think she means funny in a “Ha ha, I completely identify with that” kind of way, and not in a “Ha ha, you writers are totally off your nut” kind of way. So, you know, probably no Wonka-themed baby showers for the accidentally-pregnant trans guy.

Lip Service hasn’t even been cast yet, but we’ve got a few suggestions to help make the show authentic when they finally decide on actors and scripts:

1) Don’t kill off the most-loved, easily relatable character.

2) Don’t kill off any pets.

3) Don’t build an entire season around the death of the character who has shown the most growth.

I don’t think Lip Service will make those mistakes. BBC3′s controller said the show “offers a fresh new twist on relationships.” That’s much better than offering a fresh new twist on murder!

We’ll keep you informed as we learn more about casting and production for Lip Service. Are you interested in watching the show when it airs?
