Lindsay Lohan’s foray into fashion doesn’t excite the media

Press has abounded since Lindsay Lohan announced her collaboration as “artistic advisor” with co-designer Estrella Archs for Ungaro. But after her first collection debuted Sunday at Paris Week critics are telling her not to quit her day job.

Women’s Wear Daily seemed to be the harshest critic with these words:

…the clothes looked cheesy and dated. Hot pink, orange and flashy, with an overworked heart motif relentless in its execution, the collection displayed none of the promised younger side Lohan was supposed to deliver. Nor in a million years would one guess that the lineup was designed by one young woman and “creative directed” by another. Glitter heart pasties all around, ladies?

The New York Times was only slightly kinder, offering at least an explanation for her failure:

Emanuel Ungaro was a couture king of drape and shape. When a swath of white dress was covered with a white fur stole, there was some attempt to move from teen night out to a couture elegance. Yet will this collection of hearts but with no soul be enough to entice young women who could probably find these looks anywhere?

And though various media outlets are also reporting that Lilo was near tears at the end of the show she seems to be putting forth a brave face, saying:

I feel like it’s pretty much a fairytale. It’s certainly more than I could have ever imagined, more than I’d ever hoped for. I couldn’t be happier. Seeing everything pulled together is simply amazing. The last five days have just been so crazy, chaotic. And this is just so amazing after working all night, this week in the office together until 1 am and 3 p.m., seeing everything pull together.

The flashback middle school motif and pasty hearts could only have succeeded in an ironic throwback, which Paris does not seem poised for, although that sort of shakeup would have at least been interesting. Irony might have even been the best Linds could have hoped for, with her scant three weeks prep time. Certainly the craftsmanship and care did not have time to fully develop.

Luckily, Lohan does have a pretty lucrative career to fall back on.
