Let’s draft Betty White for “SNL,” and possibly more

Seems these days everybody loves Betty White. And, really, why wouldn’t you? The Golden Girls star recently took home a lifetime achievement award from the Screen Actors Guild and has been on an unprecedented media blitz in the past years including movie roles and Super Bowl ads.

The latest is the Betty White to Host SNL (Please?) campaign on Facebook. Started by a fan, it now boasts more than 400,000 fans all eager to have the octogenarian host Saturday Night Live. The grassroots groups has caught the eye of the national media and been featured everywhere from People magazine to ABC World News with Diane Sawyer.

The 88-year-old has never hosted the venerable late-night sketch comedy show despite a long and accomplished career that includes six Emmy Awards. She has largely laughed off the efforts, telling People magazine: “That just came out of left field. It’s ridiculous. I don’t think [SNL creator and producer] Lorne Michaels even knows about it, so we won’t worry about it.” But she said she would be interested in the gig if offered.

Now, I would love to see Betty host SNL. She has proven herself to be just as comically nimble as ever in her recent speeches and appearances. She would be the oldest host the series has ever had (eclipsing then 80-year-old Harold and Maude star Ruth Gordon by almost a decade). Plus, the show could always use more fabulous and funny females.

But, I think we can do one better. I think we should start our own “Betty White to Play Gay (Please?)” group on Facebook. Look, the gays already have undying love for her for her portrayal of the sweetly simple Rose Nylund. And she was the object of lesbian affection on the show when Dorothy’s friend fell in love with her. Plus she got to second base with Sandra Bullock in The Proposal. So, if you think about it, this is just a natural progression.

In fact, we could even kill those proverbial two birds with one stone by making it all happen on SNL. Betty could team up with Kristen Wiig in one of her recurring skits as newscaster Michelle Dison who unsuccessfully tries to flirt with a female interviewee. But this time, Michelle could finally score. That’s a freebie, Lorne Michaels. Take it and run with it.

So, what do you think? Want to see Betty on SNL? And, more important, want to see her play gay?
