“Lesbians and Bisexual Women in Video Games” and more at GaymerX

GaymerX will be making history next month as the first gaming convention with a focus on queer geek culture. The two day event promises fun, socializing, and gaming related education in the heart of San Francisco. Taking place at the Hotel Kabuki in Japantown, the convention will feature an expo space sponsored by LogoTV, Bosses of Honor (special guests), panels, cosplay, music and parties.

Those with VIP Boss Badges will kick off the festivities the night before at a party hosted by Pandora Boxx, a favorite contestant from the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The list of special guests include Matt Conn (Creative Director of GaymerX), Zach Weiner (creator of the webcomic Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal), Anna Anthropy (Developer of Mighty JillOff and Lesbian Spider Queens of Mars), Matthew Michael Brown (“Gaymer” of The Tester and Head of OUT@Sony Pictures Entertainment), Ellen McLain (Opera Singer and voice of Valve’s GLaDOS), and John Patrick Lowrie (Voice of Team Fortress 2‘s Sniper).

A slew of panels will be available for attendees during the weekend long convention. Some of note include “Electronic Arts – Why We Think It Is Important To Create More LGBT Inclusive Games.” This panel features employees who have worked on games like Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Sims. Bioware will also host a panel and discuss games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect.

Another interesting topic that will be presented is “Double Whammy – Lesbians and Bisexual Women in Video Games.” This panel will focus on lesbian and bisexual characters currently in games and take a look at what the future holds. Those interested in connecting with like-minded in their hometowns should attend “Building a Queer Geek Community,” which will feature a discussion by Queer Geek Seattle. There is also room to learn at the event with panels like game creation in Twine (hypertext game creator), “Voice Acting 101,” “So You Want To Be An Indie Developer,” and “How To Run A Successful Kickstarter Campaign.”

For anyone interested, you can register at GaymerConnect.com for $45 for the standard badge and $135 for VIP treatment. I think it is well worth the price and in the immortal words of Liz Lemon, “I want to go to there.” Even Charles from the Westboro Baptist Church, featured in the video below, can’t wait to see you at the con. Don’t disappoint him…
