Kristen Merlin’s journey ends on “The Voice”

Kristen Merlin performed her final songs on The Voice, as she was eliminated from the final four just one week before the finale. On Monday night she sang Jewel’s “Foolish Games,” injecting her country style into the slow romantic song.

And on Wednesday when she was in the bottom three, she had one last shot to be saved via fans on Twitter. Here she is doing Carrie Underwood‘s “Blown Away.”

Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to get enough votes to beat Christina Grimmie, a YouTube star who had a significant fanbase before joining the show.

In a post-elimination interview with Parade, Kristen said she thinks Christina will win the whole thing, something which she seems happy about.

“Pretty sure Grimmie’s going to win it,” she said. “From the get-go, I think that’s kind of been my gut feeling.”

Kristen, who will be sticking around LA to perform on the finale, is keeping positive about the future.

“I’m excited and I’m looking forward to everything that’s to come,” she said. “It’s been a crazy ride and one that so many people want to be on, and I got the opportunity to do so. And I actually feel blessed to have gone so far. Some people see it as the end, but I see it as a start from the beginning.”

She also said she wouldn’t have changed anything about her experience on the show, that Shakira was an amazing mentor, and that she wants her fans to know this was a shared experience that she hopes will culminate in an album in the near future.

Kristen’s time spent on a nationally televised music competition was important because not only is she a talented vocalist, but she was never anything but herself. She challenged ideas of what a country singer is or looks like while winning votes from Americans based on her performances, which other judges and her peers also cheered her for.

We’ll miss seeing Kristen compete on the finale, but we’re glad she made it as far as she did. Like Vicci Martinez, Beverly McClellan and Michelle Chamuel on seasons past, Kristen Merlin has helped to show that queer women , too, have voices worth hearing.
