Kate Walsh plays lesbian again in a new indie drama

Private Practice star Kate Walsh is going gay once more, this time for a role in the indie drama Angels Crest. The film will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York City April 22. In it, Walsh plays a lesbian artist with a partner who apparently likes plaid. Well, it does look good on her. According to The Advocate, she plays the “gruff, no nonsense” lesbian Jane. She called it a “great role” and “real departure” for her. The film also stars Entourage star Jeremy Piven, former Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles star Thomas Dekker, Mira Sorvino and Elizabeth McGovern. The official Angels Crest Facebook page describes the movie as such:

During the first snow of the year 3-year-old Nate Denton wanders away from his father’s (Dekker) truck and disappears. The fevered search for him ends with the devastating discovery of his tiny, frozen body. Nate’s death throws the small foothills community of Angel’s Crest into disarray. The inhabitants confront what Nate’s death means to them and in the face of that struggle they deal with their own concepts of right and wrong.
The film is set in a working-class Rocky Mountains town and sounds a little like Mystic River, Rabbit Hole and The Sweet Hereafter rolled together in a big snowball of grief. In other words, perhaps not the best first date movie with the hot barista you finally got the nerve to ask out. Unless, that is, having girls cry on your shoulder is your patented pick-up move.

Walsh said the film deals with “how residents of a small town deal with a tragedy that disrupts their lives.” She said she thought the movie was beautiful and playing a gay role didn’t phase her.

(T)he relationship between her and her partner was really interesting to me. There’s humor in how she’s an artist and kind of gruff and no nonsense…. I’m just drawn to the role and the character and if it happens to be lesbian or transgender, whatever. It’s the character and the relationship that really draws me to a project.

This, of course, isn’t the first time Walsh has played for our team on screen. While lesbian fans know, love and dream wishfully about her as Dr. Addison Montgomery from first Grey’s Anatomy and now Private Practice, she memorably played gay with Sandra Oh in Under the Tuscan Sun. She also got to hit on Carla Gugino in a two-episode guest spot on the short-lived show Karen Sisco. She was even a transsexual showgirl in an episode of CSI. And then there was the little matter of bedding Emily Fields’ mom Nia Peeples in the little-known 2005 indie Inside Out. That puts Mama Fields wanting Maya packed off to Juvie Camp into a whole new perspective. So, excited to see Walsh gay it up again? Intrigued by the movie’s dramatic possibilities? Or are you just frantically Googling “Kate Walsh” and “Nia Peeples.” Here, saved you the work. You’re welcome.
