Kate Moennig on “Ray Donovan” and the legacy of “The L Word”

Kate Moennig has stuck around Showtime after her six season stint as Shane McCutcheon on The L Word. From a guest spot on Dexter as a queer tattoo artist who took a liking to Debra Morgan, to her new role as the ass-kicking assistant of a Hollywood hustler on Ray Donovan, the actress has continued to be a part of the premium cable network’s family-and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

We spoke with Kate at the TCA party for CBS Entertainment in Los Angeles last week, where she was tight-lipped about what we can expect from her character, Lena, on the new second season of Ray Donovan.

AfterEllen.com: What can you tell us about Lena’s storylines this year?

Kate Moennig: I have to be honest: We’re shooting the finale right now and all of the episodes kind of blend together in my brain. I’m having a really hard time trying to remember!

AE: It’s a huge ensemble show!

KM: It’s a really big ensemble show and they always get these incredible actors to come in and play these guest spots so naturally, they’re going to be written for as well. So it’s a huge cast but I’m given some stuff this year. Can’t be specific, I don’t remember.

AE: Does Lena have any love interests this season?

KM: No not yet. I don’t think it’s that kind of show.

AE: Do you have any plans for more collaborations with Wildfang?

KM: Well I think I’m part of the company. I have to probably reach out and talk to them again. I definitely want to be involved in something in the future. I help launch it and of course they branch out and have people do different concepts, which makes complete sense. But maybe in the new year, I’ll do something.

AE: Someone recently sent me that Shane was the answer to a New York Times crossword puzzle.

KM: I got that too. Someone tweeted that at me. That’s the best comment in the world. I can check something off of my bucket list.

AE: It’s been 10 years since The L Word premiered, and now there’s probably new fans from it replaying on Showtime and being on Netflix. Are you recognized a lot?

KM: It depends on where I am. It really kind of depends on the environment. If I’m at a gay bar, yeah sure. If I’m not, then most probably not. You never know!

AE: How have your fan appearances at The Dinah and Back Lot Bash been?

KM: Well I do it with Leisha [Hailey] so we always have a great time. I wouldn’t do it alone. But I would do that with her because we know how to handle it together so doing that with Leisha’s always a blast. AE: Anything else you’re working on right now?

KM: Not technically. I would hate to speak too soon.

Ray Donovan airs Sunday nights on Showtime.
