Julianna Margulies will be a “Good Wife”

EW.com is reporting that Emmy award-winning ER vet Julianna Margulies is back for another dose of television drama.

Margulies recently played an attorney on the short-lived Fox series Canterbury’s Law, and she’ll soon be back in practice again as the title character of the CBS pilot The Good Wife.

In it, she plays a politician’s wife who decides to return to her original career as a defense attorney. No word yet on when the pilot will air, or who will co-star, but it will be directed by Charles McDougall, who also directed the Desperate Housewives pilot.

Personally, I would be far more inclined to watch the show if it had a less retro-sounding title. For example, The Powerful, Accomplished Attorney Who Also Just Happens To Be Married To A Dude is probably available, right?

Margulies fans can also look forward to seeing her return to ER next week (the show will conclude its 15 season run on April 2). On March 12, she’ll reprise her role as Nurse Carol Hathaway in an episode that will include Susan Sarandon playing a patient’s mother and that is also rumored to include the return of former ER star George Clooney, who played Hathaway’s paramour, Dr. Doug Ross. In present day ER-time, the couple has twin girls who are now in the fourth grade.

Back in November 2008, Margulies was quoted as saying that she would not return for a final cameo on the show that made her famous. She said, “I feel like I left Carol Hathaway in the best scenario possible. I can’t imagine making it any better than that.”

But she later admitted to TV Guide, “I said from the beginning I would come back if George came back. But I was pretty sure George wasn’t going to come back. I said, ‘If you do it, I’ll do it,’ and he said, ‘Well, if you do it, I’ll do it!'”

I guess County General made them an offer they couldn’t refuse.

All ER reminiscing aside, will you tune in for The Good Wife?
