Julia Louis-Dreyfus is in the running for “Veep”

Julia Louis-Dreyfus definitely has proven that she’s funny and talented enough to sustain post-Seinfeld success. The New Adventures of Old Christine ran for five seasons and reruns in syndication keep the series alive.

Happily, we may get to see her in another series soon. Louis-Dreyfus is talking to HBO about starring in its new political comedy Veep. The story focuses on Senator Selina Meyer, who becomes vice president and finds out that it’s “nothing like she expected and everything everyone warned her about.”

The series comes from writer/director Armando Iannucci, who created the award-winning British political satire The Thick of It. ABC tried to adapt Veep several years ago and got as far as the pilot, which, despite being directed by Christopher Guest, reportedly was awful. From what Iannucci said, the series seems a better fit for cable anyway. “It was terrible … they took the idea and chucked out all the style. It was all conventionally shot and there was no improvisation or swearing,” he told reporters. Definitely not a problem with HBO.

I’d love to see Louis-Dreyfus in a setting that has more creative freedom than conventional prime-time network TV offers. She was a hoot on the recent live 30 Rock episode and is as talented at timing and delivery as she is at physical comedy. Can you imagine her on an uncensored show satirizing politics? I’m already laughing. And if she needs a Chief of Staff, I think Wanda Sykes is available.

What do you think? Would you like to see Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Vice President of the United States?
