Jillian Michaels clarifies statements on her partner and sexuality

Last week, Health magazine released their new interview with Jillian Michaels which included the celebrity trainer’s answer to how she felt about discussing her being gay. Her response was off-putting to a lot of people in the LGBT community, as she told the reporter she introduces her partner as her sister to strangers and wishes she was “normal” with a “strapping football player husband.”

Today, Jillian is clarifying her statements in People magazine, where she originally came out fully about her partner, Heidi Rhodes, and their two children in 2012. Here’s what Jillian says about the recent conversation surrounding her Health interview:

“I am deeply disheartened and sorry to hear that members of the gay community have misunderstood the points I was trying to make about being ‘out.’ I attempted to shed light on how hard and scary it can be to be out. That gay families get attacked and even small daily interactions involve others being ‘shocked and disturbed’ by the gay lifestyle. I was saying if along the way in my life that had been a choice I would have made it, but it’s not who I am. Gay is not a choice. If I was ashamed of who I am, I would be in the closet. Considering my family was on the cover of People magazine, I think I’m pretty far from that.”
Over the weekend, Jillian responded to a few Twitter fans who expressed their disappointment in the Health article, which likely prompted her official statement.

Many people, celebrities or otherwise, struggle with acceptance of their sexual identity. It’s highly possible Jillian’s comments were misconstrued or did not translate well in print, but her clarification does help fans and those who might not feel so secure about their being LGBT-identified feel a little more assured that a public figure like Jillian is looking to deny or wish away an integral part of who she is.
