I love the independent and innovative feel of web series. But what I don’t always love is the low budgets and lack of name talent. So when something comes along that promises high quality and great actresses, I take note. And what has me taking note like crazy is the new YouTube channel WIGS. Well that and the presence of Jennifer Beals, Dakota Fanning, Julia Stiles, Jennifer Garner, Maura Tierney, Allison Janney, America Ferrera, Sarah Paulson and many more.

WIGS, short for “Where it gets interesting,” is billed as a YouTube channel producing “producing high-end scripted series, short films, and docs.” These come in the form of five to eight-minute short stories all about women. But don’t take my word for it — watch their sizzle reel.
Just as impressive as the on-camera talent is some of the behind-the-camera names. The project is spearheaded by Jon Avnet (producer of Black Swan, Fried Green Tomatoes, Risky Business) and writer-director Rodrigo Garcia (Albert Nobbs, In Treatment, Mother and Child). Each of the segments is named for the lead female character, and it appears several female directors are also involved.
The series also has attracted some notable male stars as well, including True Blood’s Stephen Moyer, Dexter’s Michael C. Hall and Alfred Molina.
I’m not sure how the series will be financed. Already the look is much richer than your average digital web series with its harsh lighting and dinky sets. But if the end result is anything as impressive as the preview, we’re all in for a series of small treats. Now, let’s just keep our fingers crossed that some gay women’s stories get told in those installments as well.
