“Jack and Diane” shaping up to be a sexy, violent thriller

Caution: Major spoilers ahead. If you don’t want to know anything about Jack & Diane, skip this post entirely.

What we’ve known about Jack and Diane, up until this point, was that it centers on two young women who end up romancing each other one night in New York City. They also just happen to be werewolves. Reading the casting updates was like watching a merry-go-round full of hot young actresses. Finally, Juno Temple (as Diane) and Riley Keough (as Jack) were cast and other notable stars like Jena Malone signed on as well.

With some of the sides finally available, we can give you a little more insight as to what we can expect from the film. Jack works at a goth poster shop in Manhattan, which Diane stumbles in to after stealing some lunch from an eatery nearby. Jack is a rebellious punk type whose nose bleeds constantly, and she and Diane find they both are lost souls.

In one scene, Jack meets up with friends Lucy and Anna at a bar called the Zebra Club (despite being underage). Lucy asks her, “Who are you waiting for?” When Jack tells her “No one,” Lucy presses on: “Come on, did you get some?”

In response, Jack takes her hands and “wipes her undearm” and says “Yeah, smell,” holding her fingers up to Lucy’s nose, causing Lucy to back off. But Anna wants to know, too. “Who’s the girl?”

Obviously, the girl is Diane.

From what has been made available, it appears that Jack and Diane meet right before Diane is to move to Paris. On Diane’s last night in town, she just wants to be with Jack, but it doesn’t appear to be working in her favor. When they arrive at a loft party together in NYC’s Lower East Side, Jack tells Diane she has to go see her mom.

Jack: I’ll be right back, like 40 minutes. Have fun, okay?

Diane: I wanna come with you.

Jack: You should stay.

Diane: But it’s my last night.

Jack: I said I’ll be right back.

Jack is headed to see Tara (played by Kylie Minogue), her ex-girlfriend. She owns Tara’s Tattoos, which is why Kylie was seen all inked up on the set earlier this year. Jack can’t seem to shake her ex.

In the sides made available, here’s what happens between them early on:

Tara: Spit it out. I have a customer waiting.

Jack: Uh, I just came by to say I don’t wanna see you anymore.

Tara: Fine.

Jack: And I think it’s bulls–t that very time we are together you got me drunk.

Tara: Whatever. You weren’t complaining.

Jack: I found someone else. She’s better than you.

Tara: I didn’t force you to do anything.

Jack: I never liked you. I was just using you. My new girlfriend is real.

Tara: Jack, you’re just a kid. You can think whatever you want.

No word on if this is the last of Tara we see, but she certainly seems like she’s the predatory-type. Something tells me she’ll show up when Jack has new girlfriend in tow.

Meanwhile, however, Diane isn’t just sitting somewhere alone. She’s met a girl, Emily, “a mid-20s half-Asian girl” she talks to at a party. They’re hitting it off with Emily’s leg touching Diane’s knee when Jack calls for Diane. But it doesn’t stop there – Diane retreats to a bedroom to lay on a bed “strewn with jackets.” The room is dark, and Emily enters.

Emily: There you are.
Diane looks up at her. Emily touches Diane’s knee.
Emily: You okay? Can I sit here with you?
Diane nods. Emily lays down next to her. She looks over and studies Diane’s face.
Emily: It’s too bad you’re moving away.
Diane looks over. Emily touches her hair. Diane swallows. Emily leans in to kiss her. Diane opens her mouth then starts to cry.

Jack, you’d better get your butt over to Diane – now.

The most disturbing part of the script is a scene in which “a girl that looks like Diane” is drugged and raped on video, which Jack later watches. She’s disgusted, rightfully.

We later learn that the girl in the video is Diane’s sister, who was supposed to arrive on a bus from D.C.

Diane goes looking for her, but her MetroCard doesn’t work anymore and she’s exasperated. In the subway, Jack and Diane get into an impassioned argument.

Jack: You don’t understand. You have all of this in front of you – everything. And I’m like stuck here. I wish I never met you. It’s like I’m not myself anymore. You took away my insides and you’re f—ing going away forever. You’re so f—ing evil.

Diane’s eyes fill with tears.

Diane: That’s … I don’t believe you just said that. You’re so selfish. You’re just trying to push me away becuase you’re weak …. because you …

Jack: Just go, okay?

Interested yet?

Though it may feel like we know a lot more now, there are still so many questions. When does the werewolf bit come in? And what does Jena Malone’s role of Susan have to do with Jack or Diane?

So far, Bradley Rust Gray’s script looks to be an exciting story between two young lesbians unfolding over the course of one night; like a Nick & Norah’s Infinite Adventure but queerer and supernatural. Although there are no photos from the production, sources say Riley has chopped her hair short and dyed it black for the role. I, for one, can’t wait.
