Italian actress Alba Rohrwacher plays a young woman coming out in “I Am Love”

A new Italian film debuting at both the Venice and Toronto International Film Festivals this week stars Tilda Swinton but also features a well-known Italian actress named Alba Rohrwacher, who plays a lesbian coming out to her ultra-conservative family.

Alba convincingly plays Tilda’s daughter Elisabetta, and Tilda’s character (Emma) is a mother and housewife from Russia, and whose only concern is for her childrens’ well being and the family’s continued stature of wealth and class in Milan.

Emma is not happy about Elisabetta’s coming out, and attempts to hide it from the rest of the family and those around them. However, reviews indicate that Emma might actually see this as a turning point in her life, and that, eventually, she will loosen up.

And — without ruining anything as I myself have no idea yet — there is also a lot of talk about the last 10 minutes of the film ending very tragically, which makes me want to see it even more. Seriously — tell me there’s a fine happy ending and I’ll probably wait for the DVD; give me some tragic mystery and I’m the first one in line at the theaters.

Will you be waiting for I Am Love to come to a theater near you?
