Is Tina Fey stealing from Kermit the Frog?

It’s that time again, kiddies: Pop Quiz Friday!

Question: What do these two pictures have in common?

Answer: According to writer Bryan Lynch, everything.

This week Lynch posited a hypothesis that our beloved Tina Fey ripped-off her critically-acclaimed 30 Rock from Jim Henson’s Muppet Show. You can pshaw! and pfft! all you want, but you should at least take a look at the evidence:

Both are the most normal characters on their respective shows. Both are unlucky at love. Both are neurotic worrywarts and type-a personalities who slow burn into a crazy breakdown once per episode. AND both have some kind of flirtation with the guest stars that ultimately goes nowhere.

Blonde and beautiful … but possessing, to put it politely, questionable talent. Both characters’ vanity and desire to be the star of the show leads them to connive and backstab…which usually winds up making them the butt of the joke.

Kenneth is a naive, earnest page who runs around the set trying to put out fires and make everyone happy. Scooter, on the other hand, is a naive, earnest GO-FER who runs around the set trying to put out fires and make everyone happy. Totally different.

That’s just a sample of the case Lynch makes against 30 Rock. He’s got every cast member pegged for a Muppet; he’s dissected the premise of both shows; and he’s even documented what he believes are 30 Rock‘s very own confessions of guilt.

I guess if the theory is true, it explains the way Kenneth sees the world. In “Apollo, Apollo” he sees a Jack Muppet performing a musical theater number for him.

And then, of course, the Tracy and Liz Muppets.

Take a look at Lynch’s full theory and let us know what you think.
