Hope Solo made out with a girl, didn’t really like it

In her new memoir Solo: A Memoir of Hope, U.S. women’s soccer goalie Hope Solo discusses her rough family life, her relationship with teammates and ex-coach Greg Ryan, and a lesbian experience she had a few years ago in France. I knew you’d be interested in that last part. Well here’s the brief mention she makes about that time in her life:

One French girl flirted with me for months, asking, “How do you know you don’t like kissing girls if you’ve never tried it?”

“Trust me,” I said. “I know I like men.”

One night I got drunk and let her kiss me. I’d had gay teammates throughout my career — I thought maybe I should see their side of things. So we made out. Interesting but not life-changing. I was straight.

What a lucky French woman! Unfortunately, it appears that Hope won’t be making out with any other women (French or not) in the near future, as her book makes mention of her dating men. However, it is “interesting” (to use one of her own words) that she chose to include this tidbit at all. Perhaps it was to quell the lesbian rumors that surround her, or simply she felt like sharing this story before someone else did, although they likely would have already to the nearest tabloid who cared.

Because Hope is very outspoken and included other stories that seem to be more controversial in pop culture (like that her Dancing with the Stars partner slapped her during rehearsal), Hope’s “I Kissed a Girl” moment has received little more than a shrug from reviewers and readers.

Why do you think Hope decided to write about her girl kiss in her memoir? Have you read it?
