“Hit So Hard” has Patty Schemel out from behind her drumset

Patty Schemel has played with some of the best bands of the last three decades. The out drummer has been on the kits for Hole, Bastard (a short-lived supergroup with Courtney Love, Louise Post and Gina Crosley), Imperial Teen and Juliette and the Licks. And luckily, she’s brought a camera with her to recording sessions, backstage areas and into the studio. It was only right that she’d hand over the hours of footage to some capable friends (including director P. David Ebersole) to make a movie out of it.

Hit so Hard chronicles Patty’s life in rock ‘n roll and continues up through her current life with wife Christina Soletti and their baby daughter. Here’s the trailer.

Patty has hung out with some famous faces, but the focus is on her in Hit So Hard. And the final product must be as good as it looks because it was just announced that the film will make its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 15.

Being a lesbian has always been part of Patty’s life and career. She’s been on the cover of Curve (back when it was still called Deneuve), she dated Courtney Love’s personal assistant during the seminal Live Through This days, and she also speaks openly to all press about being into women and how that’s more than OK.

Interviewees include out Luscious Jackson member Kate Schellenbach, Gina Shock of The Go-Gos, Debbi Peterson of The Bangles, Nina Gordon and Alice De Buhr of Fanny. Yeah, I’m insanely jealous of those of you who are going to SXSW this year.

Patty was never afraid of being herself and of taking on the stigma of not only being a girl in a band, but being a female drummer, and an out lesbian at that. But those attributes are only part of what makes her so fun to see on film. Altogether, it should make one exciting movie about one of the coolest women ever.

Lucky us, she also has two new bands: Green Eyes and Psychic Friend. You can keep up with Patty’s projects @pattyschemel.
