Charlie Manson‘s name is synonymous with brutal murders, but he wasn’t alone. His gaggle of followers, The Manson Family, included young, impressionable women that would do anything he instructed, including killing innocent people like actress Sharon Tate.
While two documentaries have been made on Manson and the people he associated with, a film is now in pre-production starring Thora Birch, out actress Heather Matarazzo, Erin Kelly (Loving Annabelle) and Nikki Blonsky. The movie, Manson Girls, is being written and directed by Susanna Lo and will begin filming in February 2011.
Here’s the synopsis:
Manson Girls follows a young girl from a wealthy Malibu family who fell under Manson’s spell. She was not one the "Family" members involved in the clan’s infamous murder spree but was later imprisoned after she became involved with the Aryan Brotherhood and was convicted of being an accessory (after the fact) to murder.
Thora plays Sandra Good, a Manson girl who did not partake in the murders because she was in jail for credit card fraud. Heather will play Sadie Atkins, who participated in all of the murders Manson led his group to. Erin will play Summer Sunshine, who is not a known person in real life, which could indicate she is the protagonist.
Susanna Lo is taking over the project from Matthew Bright, and she seems excited about the project, considering she’s only Tweeted one thing since signing up for Twitter.
Lo’s only other feature so far was 1996′s Black & White: A Love Story about an interracial couple dealing with difficulties from their families. She’s also done some TV, though, including work on the women in prison series, E.D.E.N.
Looks like a stellar cast so far, though they need to find a good Manson. We’ll keep you posted on any related news. In the meantime, you can brush up on your Manson history and become familiar with the real life women the actresses will be playing.
