I love finding little gems in my search for things to write for AfterEllen.com. How About You is a perfect example. How did I miss advance notice of a Vanessa Redgrave film?
How About You is an Irish comedy set in an upscale retirement home. Four of the residents (played by Redgrave, Brenda Fricker, Imelda Staunton and Joss Ackland) are so grumpy and demanding that they are the lone residents stuck in the home for the Christmas holidays.
The owner of the facility leaves her younger sister Ellie (Hayley Atwell) in charge, much to the chagrin of all involved.
This being a holiday movie, you know what happens: Ellie manages to find the wonderful people behind their hard shells and finds more of herself in the process – but the process is what makes this film worth watching. The four residents are played by international acting royalty who obviously have a good time hamming it up.
Atwell is adorable. I’m a sucker for a cute woman with a British accent in any case, but she has a spark that is especially appealing. (She reminds me of another actress, but I can’t pinpoint who it is. Any thoughts?)
