“Grey’s Anatomy” recap (10.9): Jury’s Out

Present Day

Callie is crying her eyes out in the bathroom while trying to change her ripped pantyhose. She looks so scared and tiny, alone in that bathroom—until Arizona comes in. Knowing there isn’t much she can say to make Callie feel better, she instead pulls out a picture that Sofia drew of some jellyfish like creature and gives it to Callie. She tells her, when she wants to scream to just look at the jellyfish. Callie is surprised that Arizona is there, but Arizona doesn’t say much of anything. She just stands there for support. Callie is getting ready to go back when Arizona notices Callie’s pantyhose are all bedazzled. They both finally laugh together, something they haven’t done in forever. It reminds Callie of when….

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

She and Arizona are laughing, and drunkenly picking out sperm donors. (Is this a new lesbian pastime?) It’s sweet and they are so happy. They have their list narrowed down to a few choice contestants, but the Ivy League poet wins the day. Arizona, a little bleary eyed from the wine, asks Callie if she’ll like being pregnant. Callie lists off the shitty things about it, including no more delicious wine. Arizona woefully bids it adieu. There is so much love in this moment between them that it hurts.

Present Day

Callie is alone, drinking a big, ol’ glass of wine herself. She looks at her wedding ring, and twists it off, leaving it on the counter. The doorbell rings and Callie assumes it’s Arizona but it isn’t. It’s her father. He wraps her in a huge hug, one she desperately needs. They talk about the trial a bit, but soon enough, he wants to see his granddaughter. When Callie explains why she’s not there, and it turns out that Callie never told him about the separation. He’s understandably confused. For Callie, she fought so hard for her parents acceptance, that she didn’t want to have to explain that her marriage was broken. She tells him that Arizona was unfaithful and calls herself pathetic. “Nothing about you is pathetic,” he says, as he comforts her.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Callie comes home with pizza in her hand. Sofia is sweetly playing, but Arizona is not in sight. She screams for Callie, and her wife runs to her in the bathroom. Arizona is standing there, thankfully not in peril. She shows Callie a positive pregnancy test and they both smile as bright as the sun. Callie drops to her knees, and welcomes the new addition personally. She then softly kisses Arizona’s expectant tummy.

Flashback: One Month Earlier

The board gathers to discuss the lawsuit, and Callie explains to them that they should settle, even if she won’t. When she leaves, they raise concerns that a trial could bankrupt the hospital. Yang suggests settlement because she thinks that Travis has a strong case. Which leads us to…

Present Day

Cristina is on the stand being questioned by Travis’s lawyer. When asked why she suggested that Callie perform the operation, Cristiana says it’s because she was the best. The use of the past tense “was” causes the prosecution to pounce.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Cristiana and Callie are fighting about Travis. His heart is a mess now, and she questions why Callie didn’t come to her sooner. Travis’s leg is grey and needs surgery to supply blood flow. Cristina disagrees and says that the heart is the real priority. Bailey, hearing the arguing, comes in to the room. They decide that Travis could live without his leg, but not his heart. Afterwards, Callie seems pleased with the surgery, and Yang is in agreement until they see Travis in post op. His legs are turning black, as the doctors look on with horror. (I’m no medical professional, but that does not bode well.)

Present day

Callie and her lawyer wait out in the hall discussing strategy, when low and behold, April wheels Richard in to see her. He offers his support, which she is grateful for. First on the stand that day is Travis’s girlfriend. She was there after Travis’s legs were amputated. She tells the jury that she overheard Callie talking about saving her reputation. The jury member shoot Callie unsympathetic looks, while she sits there falling deeper into this hole.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Arizona and Callie are looking at houses to accommodate their growing family. Arizona tries to peek through the fence, while Callie’s attention is buried in her cell phone, trying to get some info from the Peterson Hip trials. Arizona lovingly hassles her, and Callie puts the phone away. She tells Arizona that she’s convinced the baby is a little girl, and joins Arizona to do some peeking herself. Arizona stumbles and Callie catches her. Arizona keeps smiling, though, because nothing can ruin this moment of exciting renewal for them.

Present day

It’s time for Travis to take the stand and testify against Callie. His lawyer starts asking him about snowboards, getting Travis to show his expertise. The lawyer asks about first meeting Callie and how it was Travis’s suggestion to try the Peterson joint. He thought he was consulting an expert, and went ahead with the surgery because he trusted her.

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Travis is recovering from his amputations with his girlfriend by his side. Callie opens the door to his room, and Travis says he doesn’t want to see her. Callie is heartbroken that this has happened to him. She offers them some information on support groups, and he tells her to get out.

Present day

Travis’s questioning continues. He tells the lawyer that losing his legs was the end of his world. Snowboarding was all he ever knew or loved, and now it’s all gone because of Callie. He tells the jury that Callie admitted it was her fault. There is a gasp from the gallery. Callie’s lawyer objects, reasoning that you cannot use a doctor’s apology against them in court. Knowing that Travis’s testimony is pretty damning, his lawyer rests his case. The fact of the matter is, you can’t help but feel for Travis too. He lost so much, through no fault of his own. Sometimes I try to imagine a life where I can no longer sing or write, and it send a chill down my spine. I can’t image the hell this guy is going through.

After that day’s trial, Arizona comes to pick up Sofia and Callie’s dad glares at her. It’s actually quite terrifying. Arizona is naturally uncomfortable, and Callie suggests that she hightail it out of there. When Arizona is gone, Callie thanks him for not saying anything to Arizona, but he is pissed. He questions Arizona’s “good man in a storm baloney.” He assumes that Arizona left Callie, but she corrects him, letting him know that she was the one who did the leaving. He’s turns his frustration to her, questioning why she would break up her family.

The next day on the stand, it’s Callie’s turn to say her peace. She tells the jury that she knew what she was doing, and the original surgery was going well until complications arose. She admits without regret, leaving the sponge in. She knew if they didn’t close up, that Travis would be in danger, and she wasn’t concerned about the effects of the sponge. Her lawyer asks if she was distracted, and Callie’s mind goes to…

Flashback: Three Months Earlier

Callie is scrubbing out, when Arizona comes to find her. Callie accidentally missed the ultrasound appointment, and offers sweet apologies but Arizona’s face tells her something is amiss. There was no heartbeat during the ultrasound. They lost the baby, and they are both heartbroken.
