Good medicine: Katherine Heigl at the box office

With ugly set turmoil, a co-worker getting her own spin-off and failed salary negotiations behind her, Grey’s Anatomy doc Katherine Heigl probably needs a little levity right now. Something light, something frothy. Something that has nothing to do with her friend nearly drowning, only to be pulled from the water seemingly years later just to have her purple, limp body resuscitated with little real suspense because — who are we kidding? — the show is called Grey’s Anatomy, not McDreamy’s Anatomy (the latter would considerably increase the viewership among gay men … though probably not among lesbians). OK, wait, where was I?

Katherine’s light, frothy diversion comes in the form of a starring role in the new romantic comedy 27 Dresses, from the screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada. She will play a single woman who has been a bridesmaid, you guessed it, 27 times. Think of her poor closet — it must be awash in an ocean of sea foam and dusty pink frocks. Yeah, not pretty. But then, neither is Katherine’s big screen track record so far. Her credits include The Ringer, Bride of Chucky and Zyzzyx Road. The latter has the not-so-auspicious distinction as “the film that grossed $30 at the box office.” But things are looking up for Katherine in the film department. Already she has the Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) comedy Knocked Up slated for release this summer. Well, they do say that laughter is the best medicine.
