Golden girls on the silver screen
The nominees for the 2007 Golden Globe Awards were announced this morning. Here are the actress and picture categories (because that’s all I care about):
Picture, Drama: Babel, Bobby, The Departed, Little Children, The Queen
Picture, Musical or Comedy: Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan, The Devil Wears Prada, Dreamgirls, Little Miss Sunshine, Thank You for Smoking
Actress, Drama: Penelope Cruz, Volver; Judi Dench, Notes on a Scandal; Maggie Gyllenhaal, Sherrybaby; Helen Mirren, The Queen; Kate Winslet, Little Children
Actress, Musical or Comedy: Annette Bening, Running With Scissors; Toni Collette, Little Miss Sunshine; Beyonce Knowles, Dreamgirls; Meryl Streep, The Devil Wears Prada; Renee Zellweger, Miss Potter.
Supporting Actress: Adriana Barraza, Babel; Cate Blanchett, Notes on a Scandal; Emily Blunt, The Devil Wears Prada; Jennifer Hudson, Dreamgirls; Rinko Kikuchi, Babel
Looks like I have some catching up to do — I haven’t seen many of these performances. But I’m glad to see that Notes on a Scandal is getting attention, because if the film is half as good as the trailer, it’s going to be awesome. (Look for Malinda’s review next week.)
The Supporting Actress category is full of surprises. And the list of Drama pictures looks like some sort of bizarre rope-jumping rhyme. Overall, though, I’d guess these are about what everyone expected. I kinda wish Emma Thompson had gotten the nod for Stranger Than Fiction, but I’m not exactly objective when it comes to her. And I’m really glad Toni Collette made the list — she had the van-jumping down to a science in Little Miss Sunshine.
I really just wanted to list these so I could post a picture of Meryl Streep in all her Devil-ish glory:
Swoon!
