“GMA” features lesbian Nigeria Tomlinson during youth homelessness segment

Good Morning America had a special Feel Good Friday feature today that focused on youth homelessness, and the featured former homeless teen was a lesbian named Nigeria Tomlinson. In an interview with Gio Benitiz, 20-year-old New Yorker Nigeria explained how her parents died when she was young, and how her foster parents did not accept her being gay and “dressing like a tomboy.” She was asked to leave and took to the streets, until she found Covenant House, a shelter that provides a safe place for young people like Nigeria to live while getting back on their feet.

Nigeria shares her story, which has a happy ending. Today she’s graduating from a job readiness program to become a nurse’s aide, which she calls “a lifelong dream.” While talking with Robin Roberts, Nigeria shares her hopes for Covenant House to continue to raise money and awareness with their Sleep Out Movement.

Congrats, Nigeria! LGBTQ youth homelessness is a huge problem in America so it’s great to see GMA spotlighting out an young woman like Nigeria on national TV as part of the cause.
