“Glee” sweeps E! Online’s Tater Top Awards

This week brings more evidence that The Gay is taking over television – and we couldn’t be happier.

Popular E! Online columnist Kristin Dos Santos of Watch With Kristin, which I’ve been reading since before Kristin came out as Kristin, conducts her own TV version of the People’s Choice: The Tater Top Awards. Readers decide their favorites in categories like Best Kiss, Best Couple and Best Funnylady, with all nominations decided by popular vote.

This year’s Golden Taters’ list is almost enough to make a grown lesbian weep for joy. Out of 18 categories, six winners have LGBT storylines – five of which are lesbian. And an out gay actor won Favorite Funnyguy (guess who?).

True, the storylines are all from the same series. But the impact of Glee‘s treatment of LGBT characters among straight couch potatoes is evident when their stories are top-of-mind even after the season ends. In other words, Brittana Rules and Dorothy Snarker is vindicated.

Here are the 2011 Tater Top gaymos:

You’d think E! Online readers had been peeking at the AfterEllen.com Hot 100.

Other winners include AfterEllen.com favorites Julianna Margulies for Drama Mama, The Good Wife; Lisa Edelstein for Star You’ll Miss the Most, House; and Ringer (starring Sarah Michelle Gellar) for New Fall Show You’re Most Excited For.

I have to admit that I’ve been kind of ticked off at Glee‘s Ryan Murphy ever since he confirmed that he intends to graduate most of the cast at the end of next season. This list was a good reminder to me that we have plenty to celebrate in the meantime. A few years ago, this kind of LesBiGay presence on a list like this would have been inconceivable. (And I know what that word means.)

What are your thoughts about the 2011 Tater Top winners?
