“Glee” girls get their girl-on-girl on in “I Kissed a Girl” performance

Sit down, buckle up and be prepared to see every Glee girl ship/crackship/ship you never knew you shipped come alive before your very eyes. Glee has released the performance video for “I Kissed a Girl” and it’s an orgy of shipper delights. Brittana? Clearly. Faberry? Obviously. Pezberry? Duh. Quina? Please, what are we, amateurs? Is there a name for Santana/Brittany/Sugar yet? Because it’s in there. See for yourself.

Let’s all squeal simultaneously for about 30 seconds, and then we sort of need to talk. OK, are we ready? Now.

Right, so that was a whole lotta fun. Still, as fun and fluffy and wish-fulfilling as that little ditty was, I have some issues.

First and foremost, it is perhaps the most amateur cliché move in the world to set anything involving lesbians or girls who kiss to Katy Perry‘s “I Kissed a Girl.” We’re talking serious lack of imagination, seriously played, seriously cliché. Not to mention I really hate that song, its implications and how it ruined cherry Chapstick forever for me.

Second, and this is a problem inherent in the song, it’s frustrating to have “I Kissed a Girl” once again played out for the male gaze. Yes, we’re getting a little Women’s Studies 101 here, but to sing “I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it” in front of your boyfriend is kind of — ugh.

Third, um, if Santana is coming out as a lesbian, isn’t this song saying it’s all just an “experimental game” the wrong message to send? An ode to drunken making out isn’t exactly coming to terms with one’s sexuality. In fact, a much better option if they still insisted on being masters of the obvious with their song choice would have been Jill Sobule‘s original version of “I Kissed a Girl.”

Having said all that, I will now go back and watch it again because as dumb as that song is and as misguided as the message is, heavens it’s fun to see those Glee girls get their girl-loving on. Also, is anyone else suddenly and irrevocably in love with Sugar Motta?

Plus, any performance that ends up giving us this cuddly moment between Brittany and Santana is a performance I will shut up and enjoy. So, what do you think? Love it? Loathe it? Love to loathe it? Loathe to love it? Come on, I know your Big Lesbian Feelings are working overdrive on this one. Is it Tuesday yet.
