Getting Some Play: PlayStation price cuts

Welcome to Getting Some Play – the spiritual successor to Sarah Warn‘s excellent Good Game column – where we’ll take a look at the latest releases, news and developments in the world of video games.

PlayStation cuts

It has officially become cheaper to be a new PS3 owner. Sony has announced a $50 price cut on its home console (effective immediately) across all territories. Don’t take this as a sign that the brand is doing badly, however – just check out the happy hype released in the same statement:

From Opposable Thumbs:

Sony also used this opportunity to show off the success of the system. “Since its release in 2006, PS3 has gained tremendous support from fans around the world and its cumulative worldwide sales reached a milestone of 50 million units as of March 29, 2011.”

It is about time for a nice hefty price drop on the 360, eh?

PC rentals

Rental-by-mail company Gamefly is getting into the digital rental space later this year, with about one hundred PC titles to accompany its 8000-ish disc and cart-based games on demand. According to the Gamehunters blog:

Now GameFly subscribers will have access to a library of PC catalog titles to play as often as they want and as long as they are a member, says GameFly co-founder Sean Spector.

Subscribers will be able to download unlimited computer games – initially, only Windows PC games will be featured, Macintosh games will follow. “It’s kind of like a Spotify or Rhapsody or a Napster,” he says. “You have access to the content as long as you are a subscriber, but when you are no longer a member, the content then disappears.”

Reportedly, there will be no extra cost for the digital goods, so if you’re a GameFly member, you’ll automatically be eligible once the rollout occurs. If that’s the case, I’m happy – once the Mac games arrive, that is.

Incoming!

There are only a few games coming up in the next couple of weeks but, man, one is a serious doozy.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution is one of the year’s most hotly anticipated games. A stealth-action title set in a complex, fascinating cyberpunk world (and sequel to Deus Ex — one of the best-loved PC games of the last decade), it has tremendous potential. It’s out on 23rd, in both regular and “Augmented Edition” flavors for the PC, PS3 and 360.

PC Strategy buffs should have August 30 marked off for Tropico 4, the latest in the tropical island/tyrant centric series. Madden NFL 2012 also drops that day, on every imaginable platform (including the 11-year-old PlayStation 2), although the “Hall of Fame” edition is only available on PS3 and 360.

Finally, the awesome-looking new Atlus game Rock of Ages – which combines tower defense, action, and a plethora of wacky art styles – is out on XBLA and the PlayStation network on the 31st.

That’s all for August. September will bring a venerable rush of new games, so get your wallet in shape. It’s going to be an expensive fall.
