Getting Some Play: Holiday slowdown

Alas, the insanity of the holiday rush is now coming to a close, and the last remaining big names will start ceding to the regular trickle (before the next rush, which inexplicably begins in spring nowadays). Now is the time to catch up on gaming – either by playing the biggest of the big names to completion, check out the other big-but-not-quite-Call of Duty-selling games of the season (like last week’s Hitman: Absolution, or the acclaimed Dishonored from earlier in the fall), or spend an hour or two on other treasures.

Yours truly is currently finishing up Mass Effect 3 and, despite being totally late to the party, I’m finding it to be a worthwhile trilogy-ender (there’s a lot more same-sex action available in this installment than either of the first two), though perhaps a little less exciting than ME 2 in the pure storytelling department. C’est la vie!

Incoming!

Now that the season has become more manageable, it’s easier to spot hidden gems (well, potential hidden gems) in the release list.

Tomorrow Ratchet and Clank: Full Frontal Assault lands on the PS3 and the Vita, promising a “bite-sized” adventure for a cool $19.99. Also on the 27 is a brand new DLC pack for Mass Effect 3 – titled Omega – out for all versions of the standalone game (so, on PS3, 360 and PC).

Speaking of Mass Effect, the super-packed Mass Effect Trilogy is arriving on PS3 on December 4, the same day that the original game is available stand-alone.

The real reason to get excited about that day, though, is Far Cry 3, perhaps the last “big” game of the holiday season. It’s available on PS3, 360 and PC, for all fans of crazy, intense adventure.
