Getting Some Play: Back to school at Wii U

Wii U News

The games press is abuzz with the recently released details of Nintendo’s upcoming console launch. There will be two versions of the Wii successor: a deluxe (looking all svelte in black), with 32 Gb memory at $349, and a basic (white) model, with 8 Gb of memory, for $299. Both will be available on November 18, and both will include one of the fabulous-looking new controllers (though only the deluxe version will come with a pack-in game, NintendoLand.

You can check out all of the details in GamesRadar’s handy slideshow here, and get in on the conversation below: Are you going to nab one on launch day?

Something old, something new

I’ve recently been diving deeply into the futuristic world of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, which is surely one of last year’s best and brightest standouts. I may be late to the party, but I’m enjoying the intricate world hype-free, and really loving the emphasis on player choice that presents itself throughout the game.

I was able to pop my head out of 2027 long enough to go back to the 1920s — at a particularly awesome press event Kalypso recently held for its upcoming mobster-management title Omerta: City of Gangsters. After settling into a real-life speakeasy (San Francisco folks, if you’ve never been to Bourbon and Branch, drop what you’re doing and go now), I was able to get some hands on time with the gangsters.

The game is split between a sort of time-management sim that has you sending your thugs and lieutenants all around a ’20s Atlantic City, running real-time errands like laundering money, bribing public officials and amassing weapons. Combat is turn based, with you setting up your gunslingers strategically on back-alley battlefields and pumping the opposition full of lead. It’s a fun mix, made even more appealing by the theme — it’s simply fun to play as a period gangster (and even better if you give it your best James Cagney impression while you play). The game is due out this fall on PC, definitely check it out if you’re into ’20s criminal mischief of any kind.

Incoming!

The biggies are starting to roll out in accordance with the decree that the fall “holiday” season be inundated, starting this week with Borderlands 2. The Gearbox Shooter/RPG hybrid behemoth is out on September 19, for 360, PS3 and PC. The much-beloved Jet Set Radio HD (better known as one of the coolest Dreamcast games — which is saying something — Jet Grind Radio) is out for lovers of neon, skating and graffiti on September 18 for PSN and September 19 for XBLA and PC.

World of Warcraft is set to get its next huge, game-changing expansion in Mists of Pandaria on September 25, the same day that Dead or Alive 5 arrives on PS3 and 360, much to the delight of fighting fans (and those who love cleavage). That’s not all — September 25 will also see the debut of LittleBigPlanet for the PS Vita, FIFA 13 (on every platform), and Pro Evolution Soccer. The last of the big-big names to land on the September 25 is Angry Birds: Trilogy, for 360, PS3 and 3DS.

Also on September 25, the very funky-looking Hell Yeah! Wrath of the Dead Rabbit offers cartoony side-scroller action about as far divorced from big name soccer, fighting, bird throwing and MMO-ing as can be. Consider it a palette-cleanser. Or perhaps a warm-up for the delightful craziness that is Tokyo Jungle (out on September 27 for PSN), a post-apocalyptic survival game where you play as a variety of different animals, trying to get by in an urban wasteland.

October will be even crazier, so start saving your pennies, gaymers!
