Morning Brew – Thursday, March 15: Rachel Maddow on being outed, two lesbian Kardashian sisters show up online

Morning!

Rachel Maddow says she was outed by her college newspaper before she was able to tell her parents. An excerpt from her piece at The Daily Beast:

I went to Stanford University, and there was nobody else “out” in my freshman class of more than 1,000 people-which I thought was kind of crazy. So a friend who was coming out at the same time and I did an interview with the student newspaper about being the only two gay freshmen on campus. The mistake I made was that I had not come out to my parents. I told the paper, “I will do this on the condition that you will not run the piece until after this weekend, because I will go home this weekend to tell my parents, and I want them to hear it from me instead of reading it in the paper.” And they ran it before the weekend, and indeed some anonymous person helpfully clipped the article and mailed it to my parents-and that’s how my parents found out that I was gay.

Why would someone do that? I would have read that article in the paper and immediately called her to say “I’m here for you if you need to talk. P.S. I’m gay, too, and I like these odds.” Ms. Maddow is also in the new issue of O magazine, giving her picks for things like a good lesbian motto: “Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman.”

Gossip has a new album coming out (finally!) and they’ve released the first song, called “Perfect World.” Love love love.

The band’s performance at SXSW tonight will be live-streamed on YouTube.

Apparently Kirk Cameron wants to talk to Rosie O’Donnell about gay rights — he just won’t do it on camera.

Oh to be a fly on the wall at that dinner conversation.

Congrats to Liz Feldman and the rest of the crew at 2 Broke Girls, as CBS has renewed the show for a second season. More subtext in Season 2! (That’s a demand!)

There’s finally a trailer for Perfect Family, the film where Emily Deschanel plays Kathleen Turner’s lesbian daughter. It’s coming to Video On Demand in May.

Girlfriends‘ Tracee Ellis Ross has joined the cast of the new Bad Girls. She’ll play “Rachel, a high-powered business woman who is now serving time for selling phony mortgages” and is, apparently, desperate to get pregnant. Good luck in a women’s prison!

Speaking of John Wells shows, out actress Carlease Burke returned to Shameless this week as Monica Gallagher’s now ex-girlfriend. Burke plays Bob, a truck driver who seems to have washed her hands of Monica after she bled her dry. Probably a smart idea, Bob.

Want to see a promo for a new film based on the lesbian series Chica busca Chica? Of course you do!

Bitch magazine says Callie Torres is one of the best bisexual characters they’ve ever seen. Sharon Stone’s character in Basic Instinct didn’t fare so well.

For some reason, there are two videos on the internet that have to do with “the lost lesbian Kardashian sister.” Yes, two completely different ones. So are there two lost lesbian Kardashians?

The women of Pretty Little Liars are on The View today. Will they reveal who A is? Is it Whoopi?
