Afternoon Delight: Kirsten Vangsness to do “Criminal Minds” double duty, Amy Adams to play Janis Joplin

Here’s a little slice of awesome to kick-start your weekend: Movieline is reporting that we may get double the Kirsten Vangsness next TV season. CBS want her eccentric Criminal Minds computer geek, Penelope Garcia, to hop back and forth between the original show and the spinoff, Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior. Janeane Garofalo has already signed on to the CM:SB, and in the world of crime-fighting we call that a Dynamic Duo.

And here’s a little slice of inexplicable to kick-start your weekend: Deadline says that Amy Adams has been confirmed to play Janis Joplin in the long-time-coming biopic. Now, I love Amy Adams an awful lot, but the leap from Pink – who was previously rumored to be attached to the role – to Joplin is way smaller than the leap from Adams to Joplin. Maybe I’m still smarting because Leap Year stole ten bucks from me.

Queerty has gotten a glimpse at an Army DADT comic book from 2001 and it is insane. And when I say “insane,” I mean it is “infuriating.”

Maybe one day we’ll be able to look back on the absurdity and laugh – but right now I’m with Lady Gaga: “Why are we still talking about ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’? It’s like, what f–king year is it?”

Fox has fired up their money-making machine again. Yesterday they announced that two new Glee box sets will hit stores on September 14th. The first set is called “Road to Regionals” and is a companion to the previously-released DVDs. The second set is “The GLEEK Edition” and it features two hours of unseen footage along with the complete first season. Jane Lynch said in an interview that all of Sue Sylvester’s original jokes get cut because they’re too ballsy. I hope they make the GLEEK edition.

Betty White is the latest interviewee in Vanity Fair’s “Proust Questionnaire.” After reading it, I realize I have a lot in common with Betty. Her most treasured possession is her dog and the lowest depth of misery to her is “big parties.” Also, her favorite quality in a woman? Sense of humor.

America Ferrera is nominated for three Imagen Awards this year. The awards honor the most positive portrayals of Latinos in flim and TV, and Ferrera is nominated for Ugly Betty, Our Family Wedding and The Dry Land. Other best actress nominees include Sofia Vergara from Modern Family, Alana de la Garza from Law & Order and Selena Gomez from The Wizards of Waverly Place. Dora the Explorer is up for some awards too, but I can’t talk about it because she, Diego and my nephew were shouting about buried treasure earlier this week and my ears are still hurting.

Janeane Garofalo (two AD mentions today, Janeane; congrats!) teamed up with Zoe Saldana and Kate Bosworth to create Funny or Die’s latest viral video, “Idiots.”
