Morning Brew: Thursday, May 27

Hello there!

Ireland is hosting an LGBT music festival called MILK and several artists are already confirmed. The line-up includes Samantha Fox, Sophie Ellis Bextor, Bananarama and Right Said Fred. It sounds like the best of the ’80s and early ’90s!

Lesbian contestant Susan Feniger got the boot on Top Chef Masters last night. I’m not sure what the challenge was, but I bet it involved sausage.

This video for “Super Sexy CPR” has been making its round on the web, so I thought I might as well be the one to show you if you have yet to see it. This could also be called “A man’s idea of the perfect lesbian.”

AfterEllen.com reader scorpio54 clued us in to a story Jeanette Winterson penned about “first modern lesbian” Anne Lister for Radio Times. She writes that she first read Anne’s diaries when they were published in 1988, three years after Jeanette’s Oranges are Not the Only Fruit was released.

An excerpt from the essay:

The diaries gave me courage. I felt connection, not only with Anne Lister, but with the other women who had finally been able to decode and publish such an important life story — important for any woman wanting to make her own choices in the world, regardless of what is socially acceptable. Anne Lister wasn’t necessarily likeable — and that in itself is a lesson for women, who still now, with all our advances and self-definition, like to be liked, especially by men. As Anne Lister said, “the intellect has no gender.”

UK viewers have the pleasure of viewing The Secret Diaries of Anne Lister next Monday, but Americans can catch the film at select LGBT film festivals this summer, including its debut at Outfest.

There’s a new social networking site for deaf members of the LGBT community. It’s called FriskyHands.com. Says the press release, “No longer will deaf gay people be isolated from full participation in our community.” Join up if you’ve got some frisky hands, ya’ll!

If you’re in Los Angeles tonight, go hang at Jetsetter at the Crown Bar in West Hollywood for Wolfe Video’s 25th Anniversary and Hannah Free and Then Came Lola DVD Release Party. Stars from those films and other Wolfe releases will be on hand, as will Angela Robinson, Guinevere Turner and Thea Gill. The party goes from 9 pm to 2 am, and you can RSVP on the event Facebook page or by shooting an e-mail to [email protected].

We’ll have some fun stuff on the site for you today, including some Ellen Page news (who can resist that?) Speaking of, did you catch my post yesterday on the latest casting development for Jack & Diane? Production starts next month — finally!
