Geena Davis brings another strong woman to the screen in “Accidents Happen”

Where in the world is Geena Davis?

We haven’t seen much of the former president since Commander in Chief was canceled in 2006. But that doesn’t mean she hasn’t been busy. A few years ago she founded the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media, the largest research project ever conducted on gender in children’s entertainment. The results of research were not encouraging, as she explained in this interview with ABC News at the time.

Since then, Davis has devoted much of her time to raising awareness of gender roles in media, calling for radical change in the way women and girls are portrayed in the media. Just a few weeks ago, she was part of A U.N. event on gender equality, at which she delivered a powerful closing keynote address. The video isn’t embeddable, but you can watch it here. (It’s the second clip — Geena’s bit starts at 2:35:33).

Can I get an “amen?”

Happily, we don’t have to wait much longer to see Davis herself onscreen again. Her film Accidents Happen opens April 23 at the Tribeca Film Festival. The film is set in 1980s suburban New England and focuses on the Conway family, headed by “razor-tongued” Gloria (Davis). Here’s the trailer:

Fingers crossed that the film is a hit at Tribeca and will get a wide release soon. I, for one, could use a Geena Davis fix.

Does Accidents Happen look like a film you want to see? What is your favorite Geena Davis role so far?
